All,

I pulled the pumpkin from my 8-3/4" 489 rear. I have the crush sleeve eliminator kit and now I need the "ideal" angular torque figure. Factory manual and Haynes say to compare to the original setting. What if I don't have the original setting?

What's a good setting to "target"?

Thanks!

10 INCH pounds is a good number. Some shoot for a bit more if new bearings. (Maybe 15-20 inch pounds). This is with no carrier in the case, just the pinion.

I would use the same factory recommended preload used for non-crush sleeve pinions.

Rolling torque specs published in shop manuals is incorrect.

All pinion bearing sizes do not require the same amount of pre-load.

I shoot for 14-19 inch lbs for a 489 case with new bearings. 20-30 inch lbs applies to Dana 60 rears with new bearings.

This is the most accurate information I'm aware of:

The Randy's book is probably the best as far as information for most rears, patterns, specs, etc.

On a drag race unit with standard roller bearings, I keep the turning torque on the pinion to the low limit or maybe a little lighter, depending on what it's being used in. And only add a few lb.in. to the total with the carrier bearings. Something that will be driven on the street and need to go some miles, I'll go a little closer to middle of the spec.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

The FSM differ on the amount of inch lb. torque rotational torque on the "489" case due to the pinion seal being in place, all the other torque specs say without that seal work scope
I would use .010 to .020 with the seal on used pinion bearings and from 20 to30 inch lbs. on new bearings with the seal with no carrier in place twocents
Don't for get to check rotating it both ways wrench

Thanks, guys!

Now that I see I need to press the pinion bearing out to get to the crush sleeve, I passed the pumpkin off to a good friend who has a machine shop and is pretty damned good with anything mechanical. I passed along the information so hopefully this will give us what we need to get this right the first time!

Thanks!

The front pinion bearing is NOT press on, I knock them (pinion gear) out with a brass drift after removing the pinion nut on all three 8 3/4 cases, 741,742 and 489
