71 360 block and oil pump drive is very very difficult to install.Been this way for a couple of seasons and I have installed new bronze bushing and drive.bushing slide on shaft easily ,installed it and shaft doesn't want to go in. Did this twice, Now I have the engine out, and if the oil pump is off it just falls in, bushing is seated correctly but rod is off center slightly, if drive is installed ,oil pump goes on easy enough and seats but can't prime the engine that way. I champhered the very tip of the drive (1/4 in.)and it is better. Any ideas?
Open up the bushing slightly

Check to make sure that the pump body is sitting flat against the cap. I had the same issue and it turned out that the head of the main cap bolt was hitting the pump preventing it from fully seating.
As stated above and who's to say that if you stack up the tolerances that the bushing isnt pointed 1/2 degree off(or even less than a 1/2)... check the pump mount first

The pump has clearance and will go on easy and flat with out oil pump shaft installed. The shaft is not centered in the main cap well , slightly closer towards crank side which makes everything in a bind. After champering the shaft slightly where it goes into the pump(about 1/4" up from tip)will that weaken the shaft enough to worry about, still has a good 1/2" of hex untouched in pump?
Just as long as you didnt get it real hot... the tip is hardened, if you didnt, it'll be fine. You can open the bushing slightly to take the side load off of it

I had this problem with 2 different Melling pumps, However I stand corrected, there is a clearance problem, just like you guys said to check, pump does hit main cap bolt very slightly without a gasket. Mains are studded and that bolt is washered. Even with a gasket it would still touch. File the bolt?
You gotta get a touch of clearance between the bolt and pump(I dont use the gasket)

Does the stud hit?? Most people run into problems with a stud in that location because its too long.
Originally I ditched the stud and used a stock bolt. I had to grind a point of the stock bolt head because it hit the pump, new melling pumps must have more meat in the casting in that area.
Most recently I cut down a stud and spot faced the main cap so I could use a stud and a nut. I used a 12 point nut but still had to grind the flange a bit to clear the pump body.
