I need to install a pilot bushing into the crank of a 400. Does it get driven all the way in? Or does it have to be flush to the outside end of the crank? Do I put any kind of grease on the input shaft of the trans? Thank you.

The factory was flush so that's what I always did and I put a little white lithium grease input and am sure people will have a problem with that but I never have

I put them in flush. Add a little high temp grease inside the bushing.

Use a pilot bearing from a mid 90’s Dakota. They’re roller bearing and just knock it in flush. Works great.

Is your 400 crank stock and for a stick shift tranny? If so and your using a bushing and not the later model larger roller bearing your good up
If not you may run into fitment problems with the input shaft on the 4 speed bottoming out in that crankshaft whiney

Pre-fit the bushing to the bushing id to the OD of the shaft prior to press fitting it in, Sucks finding out after it needs to be opened up.

You have to be careful and check the hole diameter in the crank. Some cranks are finish reamed for a bushing and some are not. They make a bushing in both od sizes.

The hole in the end of the crank has to be 1.750” deep or it will hit the end of the input shaft.
