Ok I have a question about testing the charging system in my car! And I should alreadt know the answer! Must be having a brain fart! Any how, I'm running mopar electronic igntion with a dual field alternator and a mopar constant output voltage regulator! At crusing speed my volt gage would show about 13 volts The last 2 times I had the car out it would show some where around 11 volts! The last 2 times out were only short trips one was 25miles round trip and the other was maybe 8 miles round trip. My battery voltage reads 12volt after last trip so I'm thinking its still got to be charging but is something getting week (regulator of alternator) or are things setting in? Or am I being paranoid??

Thanks for the help!

1. There is no such thing as a "dual field" alternator. Please quit saying it. If you have two field connections on the back of your alternator, you have an isolated field alternator. There is but one field in there, and it gets power on one field connection and a ground on the other.

2. You seem to be mixing static and running voltages in your description. A properly operating charging system should see in the high thirteens (say 13.8 volts) when running. Twelve volts in a battery when the car is not running is nothing to lose sleep about. Eleven volts when running ain't right.

Down to just a blue car now.

Most Mopar Performance electronics are junk and the regulators are no exception. Standard Motor Products makes good regulators, but stay away from their cheap second line. Before you go changing parts you should actually do some charging system testing. The factory service manual has good diagnostics and even some old Chilton manuals do.
