Hi gang,

So how many of you have bought the reproduction battery and had it last a little over two years? And then talked to the battery people at the show and get the "sorry it's out of warranty" bull? "But the new ones are made better" but now that piece of crap lasted less than 3 years again? That is one sad company!!! (or is that me for drinking THAT cool aide??) I just had to have the wife come jump start me so I had to vent a little. And if anyone could share how to gut that thing and put a real battery inside that case?

Thanks,
Bob beer

Where did you get this battery from? Do you put on a battery maintainer on it during storage? I wonder if you got the one where they put a smaller battery inside the case? My repro batt was made by Turbostart that I purchased in 2010. Still works great and I leave the Battery tender on it 24/7 when Im not driving it.. I don't believe you have Turbostart since they stopped making them over 5 yrs ago, but supposed to start up again.

Heard this so many times..............I'll be looking for the smoothest outward appearance battery and glue on some yellow caps and not have the $300 or $400 headache these repro ones seem to be. twocents

I just gutted my 9 year old Axion Turbostart and installed an Odyssey 925. Save 30 pounds off the front, looks great, and cranks over my 10.2 to 1 440 just fine.

If /when the odyssey dies it will be an easy replacement.

Personally I don’t like leaving things like battery tenders plugged in unattended in my buildings but that’s just me. I bought some of those cheap stick on caps from eBay and they look pretty good to the untrained eye. I have a couple of failed group 27 redcaps I’ve been wanting to gut for a couple of years now.

As for changing caps,I did that with a group 27 NAPA Legend in my wagon, just took off the threads and sealed the caps.

Same here, 2 repro group 27 batteries from Turbostart, 11 yrs on one battery, 9 yrs on the other before they gave up the ghost, no battery tenders, no nothing, just treated the battery like a POS, no maintenance, go months sometimes without starting the cars, start all the time...personally I think it has a lot to do with how fit the wiring/charging system is, that determines how long the batteries last, I run new repro harnesses from M&H, and the reproduction line of Powermaster Mopar alternators.... but as they die, they now get gutted for a modern battery insert as Turbostarts repro batteries are no longer made unfortunately... the lead acid line of repros offered by others were just plain junk, the Turbostart gas mat AGM were awesome...
