Around here its not so much that they're overweight and over perfumed, its more an issue of trying to find one that speaks English..........
When I found one, and she did a good job for both my Mom and I, I started using her exclusively. She was working at one of those franchises when we first met, but eventually she got tired of the BS and went out and opened her own place. She did good for several years (a lot of the customers were from where she used to work), but zoning or something changed where her shop was located, so she closed up. Rather than re-opening her own shop again, she joined forces with a friend of hers who had a shop already and has been there a few years and is doing well.
As soon as things opened up again, she contacted me asking if we needed a cut. Shes the type of person that if you break routine she'll contact you to find out if everything is OK. Her price is just a little bit more than what a franchise charges, but between the service, and knowing its going to a person and not a franchise, makes it worth it to me.
In the past when I tried a 'real' barber shop, they just wanted to a GI cut or a fade, neither of which work with my big melon.

Pfft! I haven't had a hair cut in 10 years and I am not getting any ever again. I quit cutting my hair almost three years ago, almost as long as it was when I was in my 20's then again in my 40's. I could care less about ever getting it cut again...

After about 20 years of #4 tapering to 6, scissor the top I'm having fun going hippie beatnik, and trying different facial hair patterns (none of which seem to actually work, but they're fun).
I may regret this decision today as 83F is predicted, and I'll be spending at least a couple hours wearing a sandblast hood and ear protection......

if blasting with silica sand make sure you add breathing protection to the list. sandblasting dust is hazardous to your lungs and a known carcinogen.
