hope you can tell me why....Trans was O/H 3 years ago ran perfectly till put away for winter ..,,Now we all know the older trans need to get the vert full before it moves...but it drains again




as soon as I stop..for just a few minutes..drove for bout 7 miles.. parked to pick up a friend and it wouldn't move till I put it in forward then reverse a few times then it ran fine till I parked the car ..Then a few hours later .. same thing ..would not move till it filled moved the fluid around ...again..that was last winter.. I pulled the engine for other reasons and swapped converter with another stock one .... same thing ... HUH ?? . Thanks Larry

get a pressure gauge and ck line pressure

starting the engine with the trans in neutral is a big help.

Maybe time for a filter change.

Did that first. New oil and filter, but thanks for the input.

I read some wear that a worn separator plate can cause the converter to drain.

My 77 pickup does that, but not quite as severe. It does it if I let it sit for a couple of days. I know it's overdue for a filter change, hasn't had one in 5 years.

I find it hard to believe that, even with a loose bushing, a converter would drain back enough in a "few minutes" to cause this problem. As suggested, check the line pressure.

How much line pressure should it have ?

Ask yourself - if it was drain down where would the fluid go?

A - Start with a warmed up trans, set the level to full in neutral.

B - Shut the engine off long enough to get your symptoms.

C - Before starting see if the fluid is much higher on the stick then in A above.

If not you have another problem.

To clarify the OP, after sitting a few minutes and shifted to D and it won't move, then shifting to R does Reverse engage right away?

If so, it's a problem with the rear clutch.

The trans does engage but not fully... To get t to move I have to bring up the RPM ... But once it gets going it operates like normal.. I can drive for hours and have no problem..,,Let it sit for a while ,and it starts doing it again.. dip stick cold shows a few inches high ..get it going and level is right on full mark.. Cold on a level driveway..I have to give it some throttle just to get it to move.. and I now always start it in neutral.... Thanks for the reply..

I would check the fluid level when warmed up or hot in neutral and wait 2 to 5 minutes and check it shut off and then look at the level on the dip stick cold the next morning before running and se if the level ls stay the same or if it goes up further on the stick
My thinking is maybe it is over full when warmed up or hot and frothing the fluid when warmed up
It is probably a sticky valve in the valve body

Cab.. yes the fluid is a couple inches higher on the stick a few hours later.. also will a 65 vert fit the 67 trans ?? have one of those near by.... My 67 trans is from a 67 Imperial...Thanks Larry

Pre-'67 input shaft is 19-spline, '67-later is 24-spline...so no interchange..

Mr Kunkel, thank you for all your input..it is always appreciated and accurate..... I got to drop the trans pan just now , and besides the usual small dots of metal. in the pan,..but more than usual...I found a few pieces of a copper looking metal about 1/2 inch long stuck in the filter and a more in the bottom of the pan... Yet when I was using the car it was shifting just fine..once I got it to move from sitting..as I asked about in this post earlier.. Toast ??

A pic of the copper looking debris would help, but it doesn't sound good.

Can't get a picture , but it looks like a 1/2 in piece of wire.... it's not wire.. looks like they were shaved off a bushing or something.. Thanks for the rapid reply..Larry

Any debris in the pan larger than a grain of sand is bad news. Pull it.
