Collapse of a 5500 ton Supercrane
After the crane accident on Saturday afternoon in the Rostock overseas port, the police assume that the damage will be between 50 and 100 million euros. A spokesman for the crane manufacturer affected, Liebherr, on the other hand, said that nothing could be said about the damage. According to the latest findings, a total of twelve people were injured in the accident on the Liebherr site, most of them slightly. According to the current investigation, the cause could have been a material defect. The hook of the crane was broken during the lifting, said a police spokesman. During a test, the heavy-duty crane mounted on the "Orion" ship was supposed to lift a 5,500-ton pontoon that lay next to the "Orion" in the water. When the hook broke, the crane's almost vertical boom jerked backwards and hit the ship and the quay edge. "The crane was under extreme tension. The jerky demolition caused the crane to tip over backwards," the spokesman continued.

The injured were in the crane cab during the accident. Two of them had to be treated in the hospital. They may have been injured by a powerful impact when the boom hit, it said. Another 120 people on board the ship were unharmed. The port basin B in the overseas port is initially closed to shipping, for security reasons an oil barrier was placed around the ship. The police and fire brigade were on site with a large contingent.

I bet the crane hook was cast in China... work

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.
