Local news anchor guy from our neighborhood said he went to Costco and the meat displays were EMPTY. This is suburban Detroit. Not a small town.

Man, if something happens to our food supply ITS ON! We don't grow food anymore. And I'm not crazy about wild meat. We can go without toilet paper and cable TV but NOT food.

Maybe you need to go to the towns where the processor's are located and tell those candy [censored] workers to git back to work.

The BIG BOSS says meat plants go to work. Who cares how many meat workers and their family's get sick and possibly die just so someone can have a steak dinner. As far as the original post just consider the source of the vid.

Go way back in posts on cv and the what are you doing during cv threads to see where I posted about planting a big (ger than ordinary) garden and suggesting that others might consider doing so. I also mentioned considering rabbits as a protein source. Maybe others should also consider that, or lots of lbs of dry beans and perhaps cans of sardines. No need to wait for the wheels to fall off the economy to be smart. Some may wait and see but who is going to feed you?

You ever see who works in these plants, yes mostly packed in Mexicans, from the chicken plants in GA to the pork plants in CO, mexicans packed in as tight as they can get them.

As far as we dont grow our food, ive 600 head of cattle currently, 1200 acres of crops in as of today. And half of my 5 acre garden in, this stuff impacts me none.

Some of us will come out of this like it never happened, others should of been more prepared vs living check to check and driving around credit on 4 wheels.

Honestly, mother nature needs to clean house a bit more and let this virus eat.

Maybe, just maybe when this is all done some folks might live a bit more within there means and be more responsible.

It's great you all that have 2000+ acres. Not everyone can, there isn't enough room. I've got some acreage to grow some vegetables and there will be chickens soon but since we just bought this place we are only starting. Not everyone is so blessed and they depend on those that are.

I have 3 acres west of you in Addison Twp. and the farm is near Rapid City, just south of Torch Lake. We have 30 acres that we just planted 200 blueberries bushes on (plus all the birds). Best of all, we can hit the hole in West Grand Traverse Bay and fill the cooler with these big boys on the weekend.

We are planning a produce stand later this summer when stuff is ready to pick. It will be another year till the strawberries are ready to sell commercially.

People that live as self reliant, or self reliantly as they choose are better adapted to get through this being smart and planning ahead. I don't have big acerage (4 ac) but could do with less land and still take care of wife and I and our daughter's family of 4 food needs. Rather than sit back and see if the relaxing of restrictions works, do yourselves a favor a plant a few things. Container gardening works fine. I can think of several garden foods that don't take much room and yield many lbs of food. While at it plant some "keeper type veggies. winter squash, beets, carrots come to mind.
I could raise a cow or 3 on our land irrigated, hogs, lots of fowl, but choose not. I hunt and fish too, problem is if things get tight don't expect much time for hunting an fishing, probably need to spend time tending to things on your own property and make sure things don't get compromised.

We have our peas,carrots, and string beans in the ground. I have 40 tomato plants sitting in the sun. I gave my aunt and uncle 5 plants as they are getting old for planting a garden.

A person could buy or hatch there own chicks, I hatch alot of mine and end up with alot of roosters, but whey they are old enough they are still meat. Last time I did roosters I did 25 in an afternoon, not alot of fun though.

Back to what the op posted about, maybe with all the money the gov gives farmers some may figure it might just be cheaper to buy from others, long before the big exports and gov. handouts we still did well but so that tells me the farming industry has been messed up since the 80=s if one cant make it on there own. This new stuff is just adding to an old pile.

I left and went to the military, college and some other things and returned to farming and I think the average age of the American Farmer is near 70? And boy do most live way behind the curve, farmers, heck white people in general need to step up or get left behind vs complaining.

I did not grow up here, god help the gene pool, id not like to think my small area was as behind and stuck in the bowl haircut, nuclear family days like most still are around here.

You are not in touch with most of the country, an acre or two is way out of reach for most people especially on the coasts. My home in FL sits on 1/2 acre. My home in WV sits on 15 acres, is larger than the FL home and was bought for about half the price. But you have to want to live here, the closest store is an hour away, Home Depot two hours away. There is no cell service, only satellite TV and internet and it sucks out loud. The TV is unwatchable. Like I said, consider yourself lucky I guess because you do live in Kansas anyway. Not everyone can do that, I know I couldn't. Endless flat land with miles and miles of nothing, no thanks but good for you.

You would have to own the mineral rights on the property first to pull gas or oil off of it

We absolutely love it here but I will be the first to admit that it isn't for everybody. In fact probably not for most. Many have been griping about being isolated now but it's a way of life here. Now in all fairness all of the 15 acres are not useable land. About 5 acres are cleared in the holler but some of that is taken up by the two streams running through it. The other 10 are mountain. It's gorgeous scenery, just not real useful except for hunting.

I work in a packing plant. We process 13-1500 sows a day. We are running balls out. We are going to start running butcher hogs on Saturdays because one of other plants can't get hogs.

I can't help but think retailers might be creating some of the shortages themselves. I was in Walmart the other day (our biggest customer) and there were none of our products in the cooler. That's really weird since they are getting every bit of the product they order. It was also odd since the previous three times the cooler was full, but beef was empty. It was reversed the other day.

Just think if the nightly news said there was gonna be a shortage of hand soap or beer or even socks, you know there would be a run on any and all mentioned.

I think its all just getting really stupid.

It's not hard at all. About $150 in equipment and a source for extract kits and you're in. Some guys do it from all grains but I haven't got that far yet. Lots of sources for extract kits so that's how I do it. Just cracked open a bottle of Golden Ale last night from my most recent batch. Finishing up a Saison batch and a couple bottles of Session IPA still to go. Next up...an American Pale Ale. Then the wife wants me to do a batch of seltzer(White Claw)

You are using the term “Beer” extremely loosely. Moonshine can be made from anything from pure sugar to fruits, and, corn, and many other grains than barley.

Yes, loosely used term of making the pre fermented product. I kind of skipped a lot. Yes BEER is a un distilled wort. Wort can be made from many different starchy/sugary stuff.
To make basic shine you can use a liquid like sugar or molasses. But most will make a mash of different items of grains. The mash is most times cooked down to a syrupy liquid. The liquid is strained off. The mash is most times dumped or fed to livestock. Sometimes some mash is saved to start a Sour Mash. What comes out as liquid is a slurry of unfiltered wort. So you filter the wort and add any sugary to boost the fermenting. Each wort has a different flavor depending on what its brewed with and added. Like juniper berry's to flavor gin

Distilled RICE wort, Soju is one that will kick your butt. But some Korean makers used to add just a bit more formaldehyde as a preservative. Slight amounts of formaldehyde will show up in brewing but not enough to cause much problem. But O-B beer and Osker beer in Korea were known to have higher than natural amounts.

I like rice with my Teriyaki, but rice does not belong in Beer.

In USA's winter time we buy fruit and viggies from Chile. During our growing season up here in USA we sell fruit and Veggies back to Chile during their winter time.

Yes in USA the average person will not accept working the long hard hours that a Migrant worker will. The large Corp farming groups exploit the migrant workers, paying them below minimum wage and then charging them rent and other things. What money the migrant workers can save they send most of it back home to feed their families there.

So to get this all back to USA workers doing the work in USA, the pay would need to triple and health beni's paid, so the costs at the store would need to quadruple..... No win.

Maybe I'm a skeptic but I see these plants like Tyson using this as a way to make more money.

Step 1 - Tell everyone that the meat supplies are going to dry up and create a panic buy like the great toilet paper rush of 2020.
Step 2 - Close a few plant and tell farmers they can't buy their products because of low production. This creates price drop from the surplus animals.
Step 3 - Step back and enjoy the money from higher prices, lower labor, and lower supply costs.

I won't be buying Tyson again.

Another option: automate everything. I just sent a custom circuit board off to a client that's developing a system to photograph and determine if certain fruit is ready to be picked, then have a robot reach out and gently pick it.

These systems can work pretty much whenever, and while they need high wage people to design them, they don't need hardly anyone to run them. And they don't get sick like humans, or poo in the fields causing other outbreaks, or need health insurance.

The meat packing plants definitely have a problem with the virus going around, so it probably is a good thing to close them for a while. That doesn't mean that Tyson won't take advantage of it in the meantime, I just don't think it's the primary reason they're closing plants. But I could be wrong

Yes, but it's all low volume stuff, like the Fan Controller The bare PCBs are made in the US, and I found a smaller assembly house in the US that is remarkably inexpensive and does good work.
