After trying to adjust my clutch for the millionth time I finally took the inspection cover off etc. and noticed that one of the fingers does not release all the way and touch the throwout bearing.

Just curious if anyone has seen this before? I am already resolved to take the trans out and have Brewers go through it but makes me a bit upset that this clutch (hays strip) only has a few hundred miles on it and is already fubared.

I loosened all the bolts to see if anything was in a bind and when loosened the finger will release fully but when I tighten the bolts back down you can watch it draw down away from the throwout. Drats!

The finger height can be adjusted.I don't know if its something you want to attempt but it can be done with that style pressure plate. It should have been set at the factory but may have changed.
I believe if you look at the back face of the cover there should be three large nuts around a hollow shaft. Those are the finger adjusters. The nuts are usually staked so that they dont move after adjustment. I recall when we did mine a dial indicator was mounted in the middle say on a flat rotating table and measured to the finger height with a dial indicator. There is a spec. I dont know what it is. You are ASSuming that the 1 finger moved. Maybe the other 2 moved. You can move the one and make it the same as the other 2. If you have an old pressure plate use that as a guide. It can be done and is done. Afterwards you need to check for release... A clutch shop does both of these things all the time.

Yeah I noticed the adjustments but figured I'd better at least let the pros handle that! :-)

Why o why didn't I buy the dual friction to begin with? LOL

I guess I'll call hays on Monday and see if they'll at least let me send it back to adjust/check before blowing another 350 on a clutch.

Two words, warranty claim.

that sounds like it is not a big deal to fix.
more hassle to ship it back for repair but no doubt worth it.
doubt it will be that expensive if it is a used item.
They will reface it at same time.
Watch out for to much plate departure, unneeded stress on fingers, pivots.

I bought it about a year ago but only put a few hundred miles on the car. Warranty is probably 90 days from date of purchase. Hopefully they'll be willing to at least look at it and make a decision.

Had the same type of situation with my centerforce clutch on my cuda where after 4-500 miles the clutch disintegrated. They sent me a new complete assy no questions asked and it was definitely out of the warranty period. Can't say enough about Centerforce! Hopefully Hays will at least give me another for a discount. There is no way this should have happened after a few hundred miles. I am guessing they put them on a jig at the factory and this one somehow got through that process. Wish I would have noticed when I installed it so it's 50% my fault at a minimum.

Okay, I see your predicament. If it is just misadjustment, you can bolt the pressure place on the flywheel with 0.200" or so of precision shims to equalize the distance from the pressure plate to the flywheel and then equalize the distance of the three fingers from the pressure plate. The problem I see is if the difference is due to a component failure of some kind. That would be aggravated by simply readjusting the fork height.

sounds like an eye bolt has stretched.

I've had the same problem. A tack weld on the eye bolt adjustment broke. If Hays doesn't help, but you have a shop around that rebuilds clutches (we have Ott's friction supply here in Portland) they can almost certainly fix it up for short money. Hays should be using good eye bolts and small parts, but the clutch shop should inspect everything just in case. As "theclutcher" wrote finger height is important. If it's too high you can even compress the clutch cover springs solid and break the pressure plate!
