for the $$$ they are selling new cars for these days i wouldn't trade in my paid for rusty $1500 beater unless i got something like $12K for it and it would still cost me another $10K+ to buy the new car. most new 4X4 trucks are selling for $35K+ and that's a stripper one at that price. loaded trucks are pushing $50K+. i would have to get a even more than the above $$$ to trade in my rusty POS paid for ram 4X4.

if they are aiming for low to middle income folks, all that will do is shove them closer to going broke. they might get a "deal" on a newer ride, but then not be able to afford the increased insurance costs or the taxation that some states put on property [vehicles] according to market value. sounds like a money grab to me, just like the last time, only worse this go round.

Older cars without all of the electronics, self driving, computer screens, GPS tracking, automatic butt wipers, can't fix it yourself crap that costs thousands to fix once it's out of warranty - plus someone else has taken the depreciation hit - are more desirable for a lot of folks.
Personally, I'm on the lookout for clean, low mileage, 10+ years old, old lady cars all the time.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Wouldn't doubt it. Sad though. I remember a LOT of nice, clean older vehicles coming in (probably close to a 50/50 split between clean vs. junk, at least at our dealership). Several I would have taken home. Hated putting that mix in the crankcase and running it until the engine seized. Tim

One of my biggest problems with it was that perfectly good cars were being destroyed and the poor who couldn't take advantage of the deal were stuck with real crapcans.
Why not take the better vehicles and offer them to the low income drivers and get the real clunkers off the road?

If they do it right I guess it could work and by doing it right make the trade in's from 05+ or something so you don't have people bringing in 80's and 90's stuff that wasn't even being driven like last time.
If you've always wanted a 2007 explorer, liberty or grand cherokee go get one now as those will be the top trade ins. Except the last time around it had to be a runner, insured and registered for the last year prior. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_Allowance_Rebate_System#Eligibility_criteriaLot's of people think they know what cash for clunkers took in, most are wrong.

This seems like strange timing to try a program like this. Almost sounds like a "We'll gladly take your 2015 car that's almost paid off now and get you into an even bigger loan on something that purportedly is more fuel efficient (but really isn't) for almost twice the price of the car you gave us that had nothing wrong with it!" deal.
The cash for clunkers BS up here in Canada had a LOT of people turning in good cars. All their advertisements said "even if you have to drag it in, we'll give you 2k for it". I know a lot of folks who dragged things in with blown engines, dead trannys, gaping rust holes and were told to go home. It was such a farce. They just wanted to get the older stuff off the road. I tried taking in my rusty/scabby (but still ran great) Lebaron coupe and was told to go away. I tried two different dealerships and they both said "No way".

If dealers and car manufacturers really want to kick start sales they should step up the incentives game or pay up for trade ins themselves. Or maybe build something people WANT TO BUY vs what they want to sell.

I think FCA has done a good job with their variety of cars available. Maybe a little LIGHT on the high end luxury cars but who REALLY NEEDS that ? Quite honestly... I have had second thoughts about the ScatPk ! THAT could get me into trouble! ..... my other thought would have been a Charger GT ... pretty peppy PLUS it gets over 30 mpg on the highway. BUTTTT you can get NEAR THAT with the Scat if you click the cruise at 70 or so on the highway BUTTTTTTT what is mildly disturbing is what someone suggested previously..... that these new cars might start mildly SELF DESTRUCTING just after the warranty expires
