I'm putting a mini starter on my 440 in place of the original style. Do I need to put a starter shield in when I do?

I can echo that. 14 years wrapped in headers here on. 440 Cuda, no problem.

hi bobby , yes you do . the original one won't work right with a mini starter . 440 source makes a new shield to fit the mini starter part # 122-1001 . works and fits great . ronnie drive

I've made those shields for years. They help keep the trash out of the bellhousing on a street car. Drag race guys probably leave them off.
