Electronic is usually pretty reliable, but it is a nightmare to diagnose when it goes haywire. For a 2000 mile per year car, that is kept under 6000ish rpm, you can't beat points for rock simple reliability and maintainability/fixability. In my experience, a dual point car fires off way quicker than electronic ign. Just turn the key and it is instantly running on the next available TDC. MSD takes a turn or 2 of the motor.

Points with an almost totally dead battery will fire by bump starting the car (Stick or old TF with rear clutch)

The ART of setting dwell on Dual points is a skill I mastered. But like said, wear and spring pressure if going above 5,000 are big issues. And WHERE are you getting GOOD point sets now days??? $$$ last time I looked.

Some where in an 'OLY' beer box I have the used but rebuilt bushings 273's Prestolite Dual point Dizzy and maybe 10 sets of points and condensors. Have not seen that box in 20 years so it may have grown feet like lots of my old DC parts. frown

My local NAPA has 2 sets on the shelf.

Kid at the local AZ will probably tell you they don't exist.

Grew up with points, my first race car had points till the Chrysler electronic box then the MSD-6. 45 years and no problems but once, box got water in it. My cars fired instantly, hot battery and fast starter. Points only need 6 volts to start an engine, an advantage. It I’ll stick with electronic

I remember helping a friend change the points and condenser on his 1958 Mercury 383 two barrel motor, it was on a Friday night and we where going to go trolling for females in a town 30 miles to the west, the rubbing block on the new points broke off about five miles from where we going and by the time we fix it all the good girls devil where hook up and taken whiney

Maybe it was meant to be for that nite.! Lord knows what trouble you would have gotten yourself into. LOL
Spent all nite trying to get the points right in a 4-speed 70 Goat, bad dwell meter. Bill literally wore that car out in one year. The things we did without all the ‘toys’ of today.

I guess another thing to mention is that I enjoy tinkering with the car. If this was s daily driver, there is no way I would have points in there. But once or twice a year to take half an hour and clean and adjust the points, if it's even necessary, I have no issue with.
Mick may I ask what would be the problem with points in a daily driver? I was considering going that way to use some of my stash (& to do something different).

In a daily driver points are great. Low rpm stock engines they last for years.

You don’t need to clean and adjust points twice a year in 2000 miles, they last much longer

Thank you. I just scored some point lube over at FABO tho I wouldn't see why some regular thick grease wouldn't work used sparingly of course.

The only problem with points is having to stay on top of them. They wear, and the dwell changes, which changes the timing. 1k miles a month will do that if you don't stay on top of them. Other than that, there is no issue.

Thing is, I agree with everything everyone has said in this post. Pros, cons, whatever you choose to deal with. I know a good set of points will go well beyond 6k, and I set my rev limiter there. I have enough power, don't need to go beyond that, so no issue.

Car runs great, should have the Pertronix rev limiter in place in the next few days, although with the impending lock down, only place to drive it to is the grocery store!
