Police in Louisiana stopped a vehicle with a license plate that expired in 1997.The Slidell Police Department shared a photo of the decades-old license plate in a recent post on its Facebook page, saying, "We can't make this stuff up."
The driver of the vehicle, whose identity was not disclosed, told police: ”Sorry, officer. I’ve been busy lately and totally forgot to renew my vehicle registration."

I'm not buying it. The report makes no sense. Who's holding the plate? Did the cop take the plate(s)?

"He promised to take care of it as soon as he got home, police said."

I guess he had to re-register his car?

shruggy

I left out the last line:
Quote
Slidell police advised those who like to "switch tags" to at least give officials "a good challenge and don’t use a license plate" that is more than 20 years old.

So I'm guessing that the plate didn't actually belong to that car, and his registration wasn't really 23 years out-of-date,and had actually expired fairly recently, but that wouldn't be as funny, so the cops left it out. Again, just guessing, but the plate was probably confiscated and the driver was told to put the right plate on and get the registration squared away. Probably issued a "show" ticket so he had to go back and prove to LEO that he was now in compliance. Or maybe it never happened and the Slidell police just got bored and made the whole thing up. shruggy

In Illinoise you have to pay for every year you missed or forget about registering it again. My buddy quit riding his Harley about 10 years ago and then decided he was going to ride it again. That will be $440 for registration thank you! If it had been a car, they will charge you the new rate which went to $150 this year, so he would have had to pay $1650... runaway

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

$1650?? I guess someone has to pay for Bobby Haircut's keep, now that he's out of prison whistling

I got pulled over a couple of years ago for tags that expired seven months previously. Never got the postcard from the DMV (known as "License Office" in Missouri) and didn't even know about it! At least I didn't get a ticket - it was a really hot day and I think the officer just didn't want to bother smile

On the other hand, I've been pulled over twice in my '65 F-350 with '65 tags. Legit "Year of Manufacture" registration in Mo. Neither the state trooper nor the city cop had ever heard of it eyes

Here its a $100 flat fee max for late reg, Last year I did one from 96, got out the door under $200.

Although many years ago I just put on what the DMV lady gave me and for years ran a normal truck plate on a 28k bucket truck, they got all the back fees on that one, 7 years.

In Florida, Semi tags normally expire on Dec 31, if you don't renew the expired tag in 10 days, there is a $500 penalty.

If one decides to renew the expired tag any time in the future, at least the day before you in person surrender the tag to the DMV, and the next day you apply for a whole new tag, which costs about $30 over the pro rata normal renewal cost. I'm sure sometime ln the future they will figure they are letting a chance to screw you slip away.

And driving a Semi with an expired tag is dumber then taking a two week cruise out of a Chinese port of call tomorrow..

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

No but a couple years ago I checked my license and realized it was expired by 6 months, meaning I had been driving for 6 months with no license.

Got pulled over in the wife's DD a couple years back by our local law enforcement(town of 2000) He says your reg is overdue...my wife is like..NO WAY. We always pay that the day they show up!! He goes back to squad and runs my info. When he comes back he says..Sir,how many cars do you own? I said...six. He laughs and says..I can see how you missed one. He told me to head to the DMV and let me go....lol. grin

It's not unusual for the girl to take her car in for inspection and get told the registration is expired. On the upside, in PA ya can renew it instantly on line. The dumb thing is we never get the renewal notice from the DMV.

In a related stroke of genius they recently did away with the stickers for the plates and will no longer mail you a paper registration. The idea is about cutting costs on their end and ya gotta go print yer own paper doc. They then proceeded to raise the registration cost to help defray the cost of outfitting cop cars with technology that will automatically read your plate and check to see if its valid.

Probably checks for unpaid parking tickets too.

The last time I had a set of expired plates on a truck I hadn't used for a few years, I just went in and got new plates. In IL.if the plates are expired more then about 7 years they fall off the books and you can request the same number. If the plate has been expired more than one full year, you can get new plates. The only issue you have then is if you want the same plate number.
I just take my title in and order new plates, nothing has ever been said about back plate fees. Gene

Once I paid a penalty, too many vehicles and lost track. Couldn't find tag or renewal notice stood in line for over an hour only to find out it was paid and we either did not receive or lost once received. Found it about two years ago.
When I was dating my now wife (in 1980) I was driving her car, saw a CHP wheel across a median strip of a divided highway and raced up to me with red lights blaring. Officer says why are you driving Mary's car? I thought he felt I stole it and explained our relationship. I figured I was good to go started the car and he said where are you going, I need to write you a ticket. Expired tags.

I have forgotten to put the paperwork in the glove box. It was paid, just sitting on my desk at home. Having vehicle in remote storage locations will do that. Always have good intentions on putting in the car, but get distracted. NJ will make you pay the years not paid when you go to finally renew. Trick is to turn in the plates and get new plates and reg. Not that I have done it, but buddy has.

Somehow I've never forgotten car registration, even back when there were 10 cars.
The bill comes in the mail, you write a check, new tags come in the mail...pretty hard to forget all that...
I HAVE forgotten to renew my Driver's License, since it goes for years and I never look at it...
Luckily in ID there's no penalty, just a chuckle from the gal at the License counter.
