I’m diving into my first 904 rebuild and have hit a problem. I have the case completely stripped except for the low/reverse drum and output shaft. I pulled the pump and all input shaft pieces. Rear planetary is out. Band and the bracket is out. There was a decent size snap ring inside the low drum, on the inside part of the output support. I removed that snap ring and thought the drum should have just slid off the rear support and out, but it won’t. It will rotate one direction and move in/out about 1/8”, enough to cover the snap ring grove, but not come out.

This is a 4x4 Jeep 904/30rh. The tail housing, governer, and parking pawl are off. As it sits the output shaft will not rotate or pull out the back of the case. I assume it should rotate and everything I’ve seen makes me believe the shaft could just pull out.

Thanks in advance.

The output shaft and drum are probably seized to the galled rear support. Place a block of wood on the front of the shaft and go to work with a BFH.

The shaft might be savable but the support will be trashed.

BFH applied and output shaft is out. Thanks

Tips on getting the support out? I’m planning on more BFH.

Same technique for the support if needed. '71 and later should be a slip-fit but earlier were press-fit.

Unusual. I've never seen that on a normal street driven unit. Happens all the time with a manual VB, no oil on the governor and high RPM. Not sure what "snap ring inside the low drum, on the inside part of the output support" is.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Attached a picture. Arrow is pointing to where the snap ring was.

I'll mess with it more tonight. It seems like some of these late model units can have the sprag inner race pressed onto the drum and I believe that is stuck on the output support. Edit: Actually, I doubt that. The drum/inner race will rotate in one direction.

Anything that Interupts cooler line flow will cause the drum/support and output shaft journal failure shown.

Lockup converter failure was the most common reason for this damage in production units.
Extremely high fluid temperature will cause it too.
