Remember way back when I was told by a body man
you can paint one over the other but not the
other way around. Anyone have this off the top
of their head? I think my post order is inviting
disaster.

laquer thinner is "hotter" than enamel reducer and will lift it.
Enamel over laquer = OK
Laquer over enamel = not so nice, lifting and wrinkling of old finish.

That makes sense. I was painting over some interior parts the last owner did and was getting instant
finish wrinkling and old paint is toast. Guess I
better look for a better solution.

I had a dash panel do that lifting wrinkling crap when I painted it. I think it was from someone putting Armor All on it.

Yikes good thought, I might have to get some
alcohol out, and then find something to clean the
parts off good before I try to repaint them.

There is a difference between the lacquer pulling paint off and the "fish eye" result of Armor all or any silicone based lubricant or wax. If you have wax or other silicone contaminates the paint "runs" away from a spot or spots and you can see down to the base color or material. And no matter how much paint you put on it won't cover that spot or spots…..it runs away from that area. If you get enough true silicone on it, you may never be able to get it off and sanding may just spread it around. This is why no auto painter wants silicone spray or anything else within 100 yards of is shop.

I ended up with a mess when I tried to paint my
steering column, it doesnt look too good. The only
savings is that instead of all chipped and beat
up it it's all black, and beat up. I have the
dash out of my Dart now and want to paint around
the lower area. Any ideas? I thought I'd spot
test this first.....

If you think it is fish eye, clean the area with the strongest soap like super clean and then maybe alcohol and wipe down with pre-clean or thinner of some type. Then test. If you have some dents, try some body filler. If you haven't ever used it, its pretty easy to work with in small areas. Just make sure you get the "mix with hardener type" and not the air dry stuff. If you have plastic stuff, use the plastic type paint over it. Give it a try,, it will be fun.

you can do it a few different routes, prep the surface ,clean it and apply few coats of waterborne sealer, another way is to strip the old finish off, prep and apply few coats of good primer ,then paint,

I think the main reason you're having this problem is because you're hosing on the paint, you have to do it in thin coats and let it dry before applying another coat, try first few coats just dusting it

I think you are probably right on the armor all or
something similar. The roof trim for the headliner
I painted and it fish eyed bad. I had to sand it
down complete and even the bare metal gave me
problems where there was no paint to start with.

I'll give it a shot! This might require an extra
6 pack....

I used "Prep-All" degreaser, wax remover, silicon remover from autozone, comes in a tall round can. I have been using it on interior plastic/metal here lately in my car and when i spray to SEM black i dust on a couple coats then give a nice uniform one. it all looks good, no fisheyes or lifting.

While I am at it, any of you guys that do resto
for a living have any tips on painting the lower
dash on my dart while the whole interior is in
the car? I have the dash out, seems like a good
time to touch her up. I was thinking some blankets
painting paper and tape.
