It wouldn't wake up one day. Was working fine the day before. So I held the power button down until it shut off, turned it back on and it took forever, like 7 hours to boot back up. The screen said it was reparing disk errors. So it is working again but is super slow, really super slow. I'm thinking the hard drive failed as I don't hear it wirring anymore.

I'm far from an expert, but maybe malware? You can try ccleaner.com There's a free version and it COULD fix it. I've use that several times over the years, after our IT guy recommended it as a very trustworthy tool.

Facts are stubborn things.

I don't know. I always use protection laugh2 seriously, I'm very careful with this computer as I use it for all my financial stuff so no weird sites, click bates or unknown email links.

Your hard drive is dying a slow death. If you don't know how to work on computers, take it to someone who does. The longer it runs, the less chance you have to save data that is on it. It might be possible to clone it to an SSD, which will speed up your computer.

CCleaner got hacked a few years ago. I haven't trusted it since. To the OP - run whatever anti virus and spyware programs you have and then back up what you can NOW before the disc dies altogether. If it has a recovery partition you may be able to install a new HD and reinstall the operating system and originally installed programs back to its original state when you bought it. If the system boots up to Windows the HD hasn't died, yet. If you have good system backups of your system then a new hard drive and restore your system from one of those back ups.

You can often 'recover' a failing hard drive (temporarily) with Steve Gibson Research's Spin Rite software. I'd recomend running that on the drive, if it 'fixes' it, duplicate the drive to a new drive. Once they start to go bad, they won't live long even after fixed.

Thanks I will give that a try. I have a SSD in another PC that already has Windows 10 on it. Is that useable? I've been trying to back this up to the cloud but not having any luck doing that.

This. Your drive is going south. SSD's are cheap so try to find someone to clone the contents over to one for you.

RUN TO BEST BUY or some place where you can quickly buy an external hard drive (if you don't have one) and (try to) do a complete BACKUP of your PC NOW! Unless you've just done a backup recently. Do a backup before you do anything else. Just my opinion DAMHIK. frown

It looks like everything is backing up to OneDrive so I can retrieve it later. Thanks for all the help!

I had something like that happen to my desktop computer last year. I took it to a computer guy I work with and he said all of the data was still on the disk but the disk had lost the directory. He figured it was a power glitch at just the wrong time. It took him a couple of weeks but he was able to recover all of the data and move it over to a new disk.

I was able to save most stuff. I lost my favorites, some programs I don't use and my photos but I have most of them stored on a photo storage site so not a big deal. Thanks to all for the help.
