My grandson just got a 1989 Chrysler Daytona. No keys. Looks like someone has been hacking away at it. Looking for info or a good exploded view of the working of the column. It will need a new ignition lock. but there seems to be a ton of slop in the shaft assemble as well. An good diagrams could help

It's been a long time since I've been into one of those. There are some fasteners that loosen up at the tilt. It'll be obvious once you get in there.

There are 3 inverted torx head screws under the lock plate hsg that are real common to loosen up. and are a ROYAL PAIN to get to and tighten back up.
They take a special tool to remove and re-install the lockplate , pt # 13 and the pivot pins - pt # 25 in the diagram .

A decent mechanic can do it in maybe a couple hours. Someone not familiar with it may take all day

Same set up as gm column of that time,take 1 bolt out at a time use red locktite,I believe there 3 or 4 bolts.Use to do them in just under 1 hour.

All depends on the abilities of the person doing it.

Not a hard job....just lots of small parts to keep track of and hold in place going together

Is that special socket only available from Miller ?

Not too bad to work on about the 4th or 5th time you get into one, and you have all the special tools. Still a PIA. FSM is your friend. Or take the whole column out and take it to someone who's familiar with them. I wouldn't even fool with it without the proper tools. You just end up damaging stuff and not fixing anything.

The lock plate tool is avail thru most tool suppliers.
Don't know about the pivot pin tool.
I'm not sure if I even still have either of mine.

I seem to recall being into one of those and did a quick fix by tightening 3 of the fasteners, just to get the slop out of it. Couldn't get to the last one without it coming all apart. Still need the right tools to get into it that deep.

the lock plate tool is a rental tool at az/oboys,aap or napa. the pivot pin tool is avail from tool trucks or napa. napa is about $15-$20 for pivot pin tool. best advice was already given. let someone who has done it, do it.

The major parts stores loan out the tools necessary to take that column apart.

If the column has already been hacked up, and you don't have a set of ignition keys, you would be way ahead of the game to source a different column. A lot of that era Mopar's used the same tilt columns. Gene

Most of which have been b!$^@ed up by the backyard hack who borrowed it the last time. Don't ask how I know about that.

PoorBoy I took a look at it yesterday. I highly do not think it will ever go back together now. He has some how got it stripped down. The slop is from that plate having come loose and slipped down on the shaft. BUT and a big but He still cant get the ignition lock out as he has no keys and so far no luck picking the lock to remove it.
I am thinking that a complete column assembly with a key would be the best bet. Any ideas what years and models would change out on it. Sounds like best bet.

You do know there are only about 7 key patterns. I have used my 1984 Shelby key in my 87 Omni and in my 91 Daytona. My two Rampages also share the same key.
It may just take a slight giggle while pulling the key back and fourth a bit but I have jimmied a lot of Mopars over the years, Chevy's too.

When I worked for the phone company we had all Chevy vans. When we had a tech lock himself out of his work van, I'd grab all the spares in the office and go out and jiggle the door lock and usely it was the 3rd key would open the door and unlock the steering. Would not start due to chip but I could unlock so a tow truck could move it as needed.

Its been a very long time, but I believe Mopar changed the columns in 87 or 88 and used them pretty much across the board until they started putting air bags in. I believe all the front drive cars, and all the 5th Ave/Diplomats used the same column. I believe the trucks used different columns. But like I said, its been a very long time. Gene

OK the kid has it tore down and says he cant get the lock ass out still. Looks like back to a lock picker to get the key to turn to pull the inners out anyway. I cant remember but on them standard trans to start them Do you need the clutch pushed in and do you need a battery hooked up to car. The sad part of al this is he just sold a 1989 Dodge Shadow FOR $300 Would of been a great complete column change over candidate

See if you can find a non-tilt column. They have a nice steering angle and are a lot less troublesome.
