Big news for detail-minded 1970-1976 A-body restorers! FINALLY! Correct style of gas tanks for our post 67 A-Body cars. Until now all that has been available have the incorrect 1967 style with the large transverse groove stamped into them. Now you can buy the correct appearing style. The attached picture is a prototype. There were a couple of factory versions of these tanks with subtle differences, this won't be exact for some but is MUCH closer than previously available.
Back story:
I bumped into a vendor, Jeff at 521 Restorations, at the Nationals last year with the previous 67 style tanks on display which were marked as "correct" for 1970-76 tanks, I offered some honest critique about what was being sold (I was frustrated because all of the vendors sold the same incorrect style). He was not aware of the details that were incorrect for 68 and up cars. What was nice about the conversation is that he actually listened and addressed the issues! It was VERY nice to have such a cooperative vendor willing to improve his product! A year or so later and after some photo and information exchanging he sent me this picture today with the availability announcement. What a great guy!
The first picture is the 67 style, the only one previously available. The second picture is the new tank. They are offered in all venting variables, ECS, non ECS, etc.
*I have already ordered one for my 1971 Duster, I'll be the test subject for final fitment and will post results here.

Awesome! I was hoping they fixed the 1970 one year only tank. Does not look like it. It is not the same as the 68 69 GAS TANK!

I ordered 2 and they arrived yesterday (very quickly!). As many know there were subtle changes with the 1968-1976 A-body tanks, accordingly none of the reproductions I've seen are perfect and until now we have only had the 1967 style "One size fits all", however, removing the extremely obvious 1967 only indentation feature is a vast improvement for us who have 68-76 cars. I will continue to work with Jeff as he has agreed to look into getting further changes made as required if affordable. I will be installing one into my 71 Duster (ECS car) soon and will post comments concerning any fitment issues. Would be nice if they (or someone) would make a 1970 A body gas tank

What capacity is it? I thought I read somewhere that the later cars held fewer gallons due to internal emission venting components. Was this a difficult question?

Some 71 and later tanks have an evaporative return chamber built into the tank, probably displaces less than a gallon. Speaking of sending units, who rebuilds originals these days?
