So I've been chasing a running hot issue for some time. 74 Challenger 318, 904, mild cam, 600 avs 4bbl. Replaced electric fan with stock non clutch fan. Helped a little. wasn't running a stat so put a 180 in and its just heated up faster but still runs over 200*. Especially in this summer heat. Running a Radiator Express 22" 2 row radiator. No shroud. Would a shroud make the difference? Good 2" from fan to rad. OR am I looking at too small a rad. I thought the stock was 2 row and it was running AC (Sears aftermarket) Back when its was near new. 75 and later...

Thanks
Scott

confirm temp with a good mech gauge. too hot around town or on the highway (or both). timing/mixture in the ballpark? I'd want it a bit closer than 2". multiple blade fan? pulley ratio in the ballpark? I'm assuming no restricted air flow. might need more radiator.

Put a shroud and clutch fan on it.

After that, if you still have issues we need more info such as temperature gain idling, temp gain at low speed, temp gain at highway speed, and other such info.

200 degrees is no big deal. not ideal, but not a worry. 230 degrees is a bit worrisome. Anything higher is a serious concern and needs immediate attention..

Thanks Robert, Feets. I'm looking for a shroud. Always been in the "plan" lol. I thought about putting a longer spacer in unless I can find the clutch. Thought I had one before I took it apart in '08. Feets, according to gauge (Old sticky SunPro gauge that never bottoms. Starts at about 140, 150. Yeah, I know, get a new gauge whistling) its running about 220 running constant at 35 and 40. Gets up to 230 in stop and go. My Mopar guru nephew suggested a temp gun and check top to bottom. to determine flow temps. I know its hot as it starts crapping out on acceleration, but smooths out when I'm just cruising. Assuming fuel may be vaporizing in line or bowl??

If it’s running 220 constant at 35 and 40 mph a shroud and fan clutch will not help

You already have plenty of airflow at those speeds

Under the assumption your gauge is accurate

Cooling system is full , no air pockets

First you have to see if you adequate coolant flow thru the radiator at operating temperature

Leave the radiator cap loose , not pressurized , while bringing the car up to operating temperature at idle in park

Remove the cap

Above 180 you should see a nice steady flow of coolant across the top of the radiator

If you don’t - Thermostat not opening , water pump issue , collapsed radiator hose

Second , if you have adequate flow like described above

Radiator , as in it’s plugged or not enough capacity to cool properly

Check out the overheating post I bumped up from a few years ago. It'll have the basics to get you going.
