We're working on a 360 block with Comp hyd roller lifters and some of the lifters are exposing the oil gallery at full lift. I looked in the Morel catalog and their pictures show a full shroud around the wheel. Just wondering if anyone has run into this and if the Morel lifters solved the problem. I can order a set to see if they work but thought I'd check to see what others have done.

Not uncommon at all on 340 blocks.
Apparently the depth of chamfer on the top can vary quite a bit.
Must be it can be an issue on a 360 block as well.

Imo, fundamentally the oil band on the lifters are positioned/sized incorrectly for the application...... since I’ve never heard of this being a problem with a hyd flat tappet lifter.
If the lifters have the oil band set up to work in a magnum block, I can see where this could be an issue in a LA block.

Usually bronze lifter bore bushings are the solution.

Looks like the Morel lifters that Hughes Engines sell will solve the problem. We tried a pair of them in the block and it seems to work. Only problem is the cylinder heads have to come off to change lifters so that is an extra few hours of work. Engine is in the dyno so it is easier than if it was in the car.

This engine has the new Trick Flow heads. First time I've seen the SB Trick Flow heads. They look really nice. Engine also has a Holley Sniper setup on it so it should be a great street combo.

The lifters that expose the oil band at high lift are probably designed around the magnum blocks, which have taller lifter bosses.

This is caused by the desire to use almost the same product in as many engines as possible. You know, like a Ford Windsor rocker arm in an Oldsmobile?

The Hughes Engines lifters worked just great. Full oil pressure and they fit in the block just fine. So the moral of the story is to use the Hughes lifters rather than the Comps if you have a hyd roller cams.

Glad to read this. Converting a customers 408 LA to a roller cam setup, so I will go with the Hughes Lifters. I just installed a set of Hylift Johnsons in my 408 Magnum that I got from Brian at IMM, and I still had to remove the Edelbrock heads to replace. Haven't had it at the track yet, however Brian said the Johnson Hylifts would pick up a few RPM's compared to the stock Hydraulic rollers I had.

I had that problem with a set of Crane hyd. roller lifters years ago when I did my 340 stroker. Problem was solved by using the Doug Herbert solid roller lifters. I believe these are also sold by Howard's as well(exact same part). I've had these in for around 11 years now and 8,000 miles street/strip with no trouble yet-knock on wood lol. Probably other ways to solve this issue now. FYI-these lifters can be removed with aluminum heads still bolted to the engine..
