I have purchased a used one & I am wondering if I can buy/use a probe to put in the tailpipe to use this or do I need to weld in a bung just down from the ex manifold? I dont have it in front of me but it is the lowest functioning unit iirc (no memory function maybe). Thank you for your time. EDIT It might be the LM1

You want the o2 sensor closer to the exhaust port to give the truest feedback. If you have headers, it gets installed just after the collector and with manifolds, anywhere after the head pipe connection. A sniffer in the tailpipe would not give accurate/useful readings because it would mix with ambient air.

Innovate used to sell a clip to put the sensor up in the tailpipe with. Maybe check their site for accessories.

LM1 is a good unit.

I have an LM-1 setup with tailpipe probe if anyone wants to buy it.

PM if interested.

Thanks,
Larry

My brother used the sniffer in the pipe on his bike dyno and you can make a tube to reach up into the pipe as far as you can push it.

I would think if you had it several inches in the pipe that it would be completely bathed in the exhaust & no outside atmosphere there but evidently that ain't the case that the probe needs to be way up in there for an accurate reading.

Yes the bike probe was only 18 to 24" but you can have more is all.

By the time the exhaust gas gets to the tail pipe, it's lost a lot of heat and pressure and starts to mix with ambient air. Those factors will alter the composition of the gas enough to change the O2 reading. Most newer cars have the first O2 sensor in the head pipe right after the manifold. 4 cylinder cars have the sensor where the tubes merge coming out of the head. The downstream O2 is after the cat as a comparison to the front to make sure the cat is working and are sometimes calibrated differently. The sniffer was generally used for pre-OBD emissions tests where the car was driven on a dyno under different loads. Once the O2s came out, the sniffer became obsolete.

If welding a bung is not in the cards, why not get an O2 sensor clamp kit? Drill a hole, wrap the clamp around the pipe with the gasket inside, tighten it up and you're good to go. I used one of those on my truck with an Autometer A/F gauge. Worked good.

My intent was to potentially get an accurate reading on a friends car with just a probe but it don't sound like that is workable. Alright I will go ahead & weld in a bung up front on my own stuff when the time comes. Thanks guys!

Innovate has a clamp deal for tailpipe use but you have to put it in above where any moisture in the tail pipe will not get to the o2 sensor, and your exhaust has to be perfectly sealed as any leak will throw the readings off, I used mine in the end of the collector and it worked just fine untill I had a chance to weld in a bung, seen very little change in the AFR readings.
