I recently bought a 2011 Dakota, and it only came with one key. The key is a regular key that inserts in the steering column, but it has a remote head on it. I'd like to get another one, so I have a spare. I've seen them online for about 30.00. But how do I program it. Would it come with directions, so I could program it myself? Or do I have to take it to a locksmith or the dealer? Any recommendations on who to buy it from online?

I can relate, the 300 SRT8 I just bought only came with one key.

I don't understand why the keys never seem to get passed along.

I called Beishir Lock, they want $225 for a cut programmed key.

I'll just do what I did for spares for Kayse's car and order the off ebay and have them cut and programmed.
(Ordered them last night, 2 for $12.77)

Kayse's Dad has a programmer box that's supposed to program them, but they still need cut.

If you're there tomorrow night (tentatively Chaney's house) we can discuss it.

Bought them online for 2005 van .Took them to Ace hardware and they cut the keys for a couple bucks each.
Went to local Dodge dealer and they did the code . Charged 30 bucks to program them . When i called it was the
same price fore multiple keys . I had 4 and it was 30 bucks . If i had done just one it was 30 bucks .

Thanks Rich. I'll be at Chaney's, and talk to you then.

Bought one online for the '06 2500 we had that turned out to be junk. Broke apart on my wife after a few months and the free replacement did the same thing. down Might consider spending a few dollars more for a factory key.
Also learned that lesson with the wife's '16 Challenger fob. Bought one online that looked just like a factory fob but for 1/4 the price. Buttons worked fine but you had to use the end of the fob to push the start button and then leave the fob in the console. If you didn't, you would get the "key has left vehicle" message. frown Made sure we got 2 factory keys w/ the '17.

I'm assuming that the factory key must come from the dealer. Any rough idea on cost?
