It has the 1.375 (1 3/8) wide band with a center grove. Should I replace it with one that has the center grove, or does it make that much difference.

The center groove does subtract some surface area from the band but it also offers an escape path for fluid to flow through during application; like all such things it's a tossup, some good some bad.

Thanks, John. I appreciate the input. Probably just let price be the deciding factor

Just a thought - this tranny came out of a 78 Dodge Dippy police car with 318. It's going behind my mildly built 360. 1. should I go with the larger 1.610 inch band and 2. will it fit or do I need to change drums to do this? Rear band is a double wrap 2 inch band.
