my service manual says 40 lb-ft for the (8) large bolts - but says nothing about the (6) small plate bolts front & rear?

"evenly snug" would likely suffice on that situation which is probably why no spec is given but a person could Google the torque spec (in lbs) for the grade/dia of those small bolts in question. Dont forget some sealer under the valley pan ends to keep the oil where it belongs.

I would not do 40 on an aluminum intake. Cast iron ok, but not aluminum. I believe I torque my aluminum manifolds with a good washer to 35 ft lbs. That should be adequate for a grade 5 bolt.

All the factory service manuals I've used say 35 Ft..Lbs. on the 3/8 intake bolts, not 40 Ft Lbs. The 1/4 inch end bolts need to be tight, not twisted off As said some of the after market intake manifold specs. sheets call from 25 to 30 Ft. Lbs. I do retorque the intake bolts several times after driving it enough until the bolts take a final set and stop moving

For torque specs when not in the FSM. Though the FSM used to have something similar in in. Do not change the spec just because it's clamping an aluminum manifold.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.
