I want to repaint my headlight bezels and the headlight openings to around 1/8" outside the openings are not painted. Is there a trick for masking off that area so the area ouside the openings looks uniform?

I know you are talking about the headlight bezels but here is a pic of a factory correct 70 grill. You can see that the paint is anything but neat. I think some type of foam tape was used at the factory which resulted in the soft edge...not a well defined paint line. I assume the headlight bezels should be the same way?

Very thin masking tape. Much thinner than this was used to make the tight curves around the parking lights.

They make fine line tape for stripes etc.
Then masking tape over it.
I painted 2 of these. 2 are nos right out of the box.
One of the top one's I painted and the other top one is nos. The paint I used was a exact match and I got the numbers right out of the service body manual for 71.
The bottem one painted black is incorrect. It was a practice peice for me.

Lot's of stuff inside the car also get's painted with the same paint.
This was practice on the headlite bezal, I know it's taped wrong. I was more interested in the paint match which was exact.See the black fine line tape under the green masking tape, that's what you use to get that fine line. Can't get it with reg masking tape.

This grill is missing the silver, it was added after this picture. At the time I thought it was done until I looked closer, then I added the silver poly which is the exact paint for wheels and lot's more. One of there bezals are nos and the other I painted to match. the color was dead on.

Got it! Thanks!
I got some 1/4" 3m fine line vinyl tape yesterday and just eyeballed the countour of the headlight opening. Did not take me very long even tho I took my time. Looks close enough to me...

Time for paint now....
