Years ago I did some work to a fox body mustang grudge car that had a Gene Fulton SBC on a lot of spray. Backhalved ladder bar car on a true 10.5 slick, ran 4s in the 1/8. Was very surprised to see it still had an 8.8 under it. Claimed they didn't have any trouble w/ it?
Good friend of mine had a late '80s model chevy S-10 blazer that ran 5.40s in the 1/8 w/ a 496 BBC. Had an 8.8 from a Ford Explorer under it...don't recall him ever breaking that rear.
Both of these were lightweight vehicles though.

I am sure the difference with it is just like the 9" and the 8.75, the ring gear diameter isn't different enough to matter but the support around the pinion is better so there is less deflection.
I have seen slow cars break 8.8s but I have seen way more people go 8s with them with only minimal mods(girdle cover and axles).
The Ford Explorer 97-02ish 8.8s are good upgrades for lots of muscle cars. The size is pretty good for lots of cars and they have 3.73 or 4.10 gears, 31 spline axles, and good disc brakes. I have had an explorer 8.8 in my Jeep with 4.56s and a drop in locker for a very long time, good axle.

For what it's worth, the first time I raced my 97 Cobra, which is relatively stock, on drag radials, it took three runs to destroy the spider gears and twist both axles. In stock form, they're not bad but have limitations. A few upgrades and they'll live a very long maintenance free life.
In other instances, they seem fine for a long time with nothing. I had a friend with a low 10 second auto Mustang that ran on a completely stock 8.8 for seasons without issue. One day, I was watching him at the track and he launched, got a few feet and the driver side axles broke and spit what was left out and the tire and rim rolled about 15 foot away from the car. A friend of mine had a 93 Cobra with a 5 speed in it. He broke one of the axles so bad it looked like a bear chewed the end off. It basically exploded the splines and about 6" of axle after that! It ran 10.30s though.

So……. just quoting what your saying basically the only difference is the ring gearing being slightly bigger, and the pinion gear having more support what about the pinion to ring gear contact? How much difference is the this compared to the 8.75 does the ring gear/pinion sits higher / lower than the 8.75...…...Thaxs to the op. for this ? was thinking bout this a few weeks ago and thought about posting this I don't know if it has better pinion contact or not, but we can assume the pinion is supported better and likely has a better contact patch. The caps on the 8.8s are known to be weak so I don't think that area is so much of an upgrade over the 8.75.
