Im in the process of rebuilding my motor. I can't make up my mind about a cam choice. I was running a Cam Motion CM-1 cam in my motor. A 12.1 451 with indy 440-1 heads, in a full street trim 70 GTX. The CM-1 was a little too much for street driving, so im thinking a little something tamer. I was looking at the R-1 Cam that specs out at 272/276@.50 with 620 lift comapred to the Cm-1 cam that has 276/283 @.50 with 691/630 lift.

This isnt a car that i drive on the street all the time, I drive it from time too time, and race it every so often. Guess what im asking has anybody run the R-1 , and does it have decent street manners. Im just pulling my hair out trying to pick a cam.

i have a 500" motor in 3 of my street cars.i use indys r-1 cam in all of them.they do really well on the street.they have very good low end,and good top end.they idle really good too,900-1000rpm.also they are pretty easy on parts, like rockers and lifters.i do however have to change valve springs often, maybee every 1000-1500 miles.if you let them go,you will float the valves and break one of them.it happend to me about 4 months ago.it broke the head of a exhaust valve.i was wondering about the cm-1 cam on one of my 500" motors.i have a spare from changing to a cm-2 cam in my 572" motor.you say you did not like it?can you tell me more about how it did,and what you did not like?

THe cm-1 cam made killer power, i will say that. My car has a 4.10 gear and about a 4000 stall. Honestly, my car needed a higher stall and probably a 4.56 gear to make that cam work the best. Even so , the car ran in the 10.70's at the track. The CM-1 cam just didnt have a great idle and didnt have great street manners in my book. But i know streetability means different things to everybody. Im sure in a 500 cube motor, it would be more street friendly.

I run the R-1 cam in my nss car. my motor is only 451ci, with the factory crossram and thru the mufflers my car has run in the low 10.60's. My car is pretty much street legal. the cam is definitely easy on the valvetrain

Why not call a cam guru like Fast68Plymouth and have him spec you a custom one that will give you the properties you are looking for?

That is a much bigger cam than I'd ever use in a street driven 451 motor. I have a 266/272 cam in my 505 motor that makes about 800 hp and even that is a little too radical of an idle for street use in my mind. If I was driving it on the street I'd probably back my combo down to something in the 260 range. For a 451 I'd drop even more than that.

Try a Comp street roller like a XR292 or XR298. With good heads and good compression you should be 700+ hp and it will still idle halfway decent.

I was thinking the same thing about those 2 that you mentioned. My only concern is that i might have too much cylinder pressure, causing the car to ping like crazy driving it on the street.

Do you have E-85 available? That might be a solution to your high compression.

Well after talking with a few places and people, ive decided on the comp cams xr298r grind, the same one you used in the 505 stroker buildup. This will be a lot more street friendly that my cm-1 cam and the R-1 cam i was considering. It should still make great power and run well at the track.

Rebel, can you tell us more about your combination? I am running this cam in a 493 in a 3200 lb duster. CNC'd EZ heads with 11.5 to 1. I will be on the Dyno this Friday.

I have that XR298 sitting out on the shelf if you're interested. It has a little dyno time on it but should be ready to slide in and go. Mine was ground on 108 centers and I think we ran it installed on 106.

I ran it with 1.60 rocker arms and it made great power in my 505 and had a healthy lope at idle. Might be a tad bit more radical sounding in a 451 but that will depend on your exhaust system. That cam was making right around 680 hp in my 505 with the MP 452 heads. With my EZ heads that cam would've gone about 750 hp in my 505.

Darn, your a few hours late, I probably would of offered ya something for it. Well, i already called comp cams and they are grinding one for me. The tech guy recommended i have mine ground on a 110 center and install it at 106. He said the 110 center will give me a little better idle quality. And I'd like to build a 500 cube stroker in the future, so I could probably use this too for it.

Like I said, this is not a daily driver, and it should be way nicer on the street than my cm-1 cam. For exhaust I run 2 inch hedman headers with 3 1/2 of the headers to super 44 flowmasters, with 3 inch tailpipes, it should sound wicked. I referenced your motor when i spoke to them and they remebered the cam. Thanks for all your input

Yep, the XR298R isn't in the catalog but the lobes are. So it is really just a semi-custom cam. They make the XR298R for other engines, just don't offer it in the catalog for the big Mopar for some reason. Let us know how it works out for you, it should be a good combo.

Link to article where I used that cam:

We have had taht cam in two different 451 combos, one with stock port window home ported Stage VI heads, 10.8:1 CR, M1 single plane, 1000 cfm demon, Hooker 2" x 44" headers; it made 649 hp at 6000 rpm and 612 ft-lb at 5000 with good torque even down low. Then a change to home ported 440-1 heads & intake, 2" x 34" headers and a 1050 dominator, the CR rose to about 11.2:1. It made 713 hp at 7300 rpm, and close to 570 ft-lb at 5600, and had absolutely no power below 4000 rpm.

I found that cam to be a tad lazy for a street car. IMHO
I think the intake opens at 28 on that cam...there's much better choices out there...

R-1 is a fantastic cam! Anybody running one already knows this--it does not look like a big deal on paper but that cam in a 451 is great! VERY easy on parts--the correct spring will last forever--don't run tool steel springs on the street--they will break! Go with a chrome silicon and forget them!

In our case, it wasn't the cam that killed the engines low end, it was the port size.
