I am going to change my 67 GTX from manual to power steering. I have bought a complete power steering column but would like to swap only the steering shaft and coupler and not the entire column. I have only taken apart one steering column ever and it was years ago so I don't remember exactly how it came apart. So my question is, in order to pull the manual shaft out and install the power shaft, do I have to take the entire column out of the car or can I do the swap with the column in the car?

The steering shaft slides into the column from the bottom. I don't see a way to do that if it's in the car.

It may work if the K-frame is out.......

Easier to pull the column though.

I've done it without pulling the column out. the column would have to be unbolted and pulled and tilted down. shaft would need to be knock out of the bearing and pushed to the front of the engine bay. it's really easier to just remove the steering wheel, drive the pin out of the coupler, unbolt the column, take it out and put it on a bench. the only reason I didn't pull the column on the change I did was a 1965 cable column.

Lazy is the word. Pull the column and when you take it apart keep track of all the individual ball bearings from the lower bearing, they will go all directions.
