I had a Legendary vinyl top put on my car.1st thing I noticed is the seams are a lot thicker than the original.I later had the front glass installed and now the top windshield molding doesn't fit correctly due to the thickness of the seams on the vinyl top.
Has anyone else run into this problem and if so,what is the fix?I've thought about trying to shave down the seam thickness in the molding channel, but don't want to ruin the top by doing that.Any one have any ideas.Thanks.

Did you buy your top from Legendary?, did it have a Legendary tag sewn into the underside?

I have a Legendary top on my 70 Charger that I've installed, ZERO issues, esp the ones you describe...I've also installed Legendary tops for perhaps the last 30 yrs with minimal to zero issues, generally seam issues are that of having too much material between them, esp at the dutchman panel...

is there any chance your installer cut and overlapped the seam at the windshield for some reason?...

Mike

Mike,it is a Legendary top has the tag sewn into it.The problem is where the top rolls into the clip channel. The seam is so thick that it interferes with the molding sitting tight against the roof panel.
Its to late to call Legendary now,I just have to deal with what is thrown at me and I'm not sure how to proceed from here.

OK, a pic is worth a thousand words, perhaps you could post a good pic to see what the issue is? seeing it was installed by someone other than you, have you checked to see if the seams were cut and the material overlapped and glued down, I ask this because I've seen some hacks in the past cut the center panel out, glue it down, then glue/overlap the sides, this would cause the seams to sit high...

No,he didn't modify the top at all.He just rolled the material into the clip channel like you would with any top.Its just the seam is so thick that it keeps the molding from sitting flush against the roof.

Was the roof replaced?

No,roof sheet metal is original.

I dealt with that when I put the vinyl on my 70 Cuda.
I used a flat punch knock the height down just a bit. I didn't like doing it, but I sure wasn't going to cut the vinyl, or modify the trim (which would be VERY visable).

Work slow. Might help to make a template in order to gauge/measure progress.

Stop when you reach a level you can live with, obviously this is a crude fix.....but what else is there without starting over?

The biggest problem I'm having is there is a molding clip right next to the seam in the vinyl. With the seam being taller than it should be the molding won't pull in enough to sit against the roof. When the molding is on you can actually see the 2 molding clips to the outside of the seam and the molding sits at an angle.

I had the same problem when I installed the vinyl top on 68 Coronet
back in August. I too bought the Legendary vinyl top in Antique Green.
The problem is when folding the seam over the roof edge the seam is thick. I had to press and pinch the seam with my fingers to fold it in. After I did this for a while I was able to get the moulding on. Just keep pressing and pinching the seam , This will lower the height profile and you will be able to get the moulding on.

From previous post:

"The biggest problem I'm having is there is a molding clip right next to the seam in the vinyl. With the seam being taller than it should be the molding won't pull in enough to sit against the roof. When the molding is on you can actually see the 2 molding clips to the outside of the seam and the molding sits at an angle."

Yes, the location of the moulding clip is next to the seam.
That's where I had to work folding that seam and making it flatter.

Maybe a totally dumb idea, but can you put a magnet on the high areas for a couple days and let it squish the seam down for you?

Can you use a hair dryer to soften it and flatten it some?

Just wanted to update my post. Was able to get the molding to fit very nice.We were able to warm up the vinyl with a heat gun and flatten the seam out a little bit and we also made some relief cuts down low on the clip side of the molding and that allowed us to contour the molding a bit to get it to fit as nice as possible. It still is pushed away a bit at the seam, but it looks ok as I don't think we could get it any better.
Thanks to all that replied as collectively all replies helped fix the problem.
