Finally got everything dialed in or so I thought. Did great at first as far as downshifting into passing gear once I got everything adjusted right. Drove for the first time yesterday in a while, and it would downshift into passing gear, but once I came to a stop and then took off it wouldn't shift back up until I put it in neutral then back in drive and it would shift normal again. Any ideas? 70 T/A 340 727

I ain't diagnosing, just a FYI, the ext housing would need to come (back) off to get to the governor.

An old technician trick - get up to about 35-40 mph and throw in park for a second.
No longer.

Then take it out of park real quick.

It will make an atrocious noise but the vibration will break the governor valve and weight loose.
It won’t break parts, won’t damage anything if you do it quick.

If it doesn’t break loose then you have to pull the extension housing.

A fresh build like you say - probably got some dirt in it.

Try this first it's worked plenty of times for me.

eek I read about this on another forum, but I don't feel like this would result in anything but catastrophic failure. Awful sounds rarely if ever result in something positive.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Plenty of them here -

If you follow the instructions you won’t break anything.

Transman's. I used that trick a number of times while working at a trans shop. As long as you go the recommended speed to do this it won't engage the park pawl. Don't try it at a slower speed or you will cause yourself problems and don't let it slow down. When you hit park your will hear a ratcheting noise then get back in gear quickly. Basically stick in park and pull it back out. What it does is rattle the governor loose.

I had heard about that (on here). I was thinking iirc that you only go partway & briefly into park (just enough to get it schreeching) to shock it loose. I dont remember anything about the speed.

Anything slower then 35 and it's possible the trans will go into park. The (park) notched ring on the out put shaft moves too fast at 35+ to allow the pawl to engage.

Problem could also be a stuck 2-3 shift valve; only way to tell is to hook up a test gauge to the governor pressure test port, if there is more than 2 psi after coming to a stop the problem is the governor. If not, it's a stick shift valve and the VB has to come out.

Shifts normal if driving normal. Only did this after going into passing gear under full throttle then coming to a stop, starting off again and didn't upshift. Put in neutral or 1 or 2 then back in drive shifts normal again until repeating.

If it only does this after going deep in the throttle you could have either a sticky throttle pressure linkage and/or TP valve/kickdown in the valve body.

If you start the car, you drive it and it shifts normally all the time, downshifts coming to a stop and upshifts like it’s supposed to then I would look elsewhere than the governor.

Question is, is it starting off on 1st after the stop and won't upshift or is it starting off in 3rd after the stop and won't upshift because it's already in top gear?

Again, testing governor pressure will tell what's wrong.

It's for sure not 3rd. When it kicks down from 3rd into passing gear does it go to 2nd or 1st. Whatever it goes to when flooring it is what it starts off in and won't shift up until going to neutral then back to drive, driving normal and it's back to shifting normal. 1st, 2nd, 3rd as it should, stop, and starts off in 1st again and shifts like nothing is wrong till you floor it again and then it does the same thing.

Have you checked the kickdown (throttle pressure) linkage to make sure it's not sticking?
