How much clearence should I have doing the 10* BTDC to 10* ATDC check?
I have checked by using zero lash ( lash is .018") and then added .100" at the retainer and had no interference. Is this sufficient, or should I make additonal checks?

I also checked at max lift and I can push the rocker on further to bottom on the seal never hitting the piston.

I like to clay them also but the .100 is enough if
you checked it every degree from about 15 before to
15 after just to make sure

I pre loaded the rocker .100" and rotated the crank. I never had inteference.
Should I check BTDC & ATDC as well?
I usually use clay too but I was trying to measure this one.

Thanks,
Mark

Well if you want to measure it, start at 15 before
and press the valve down till it hits and take your
reading(on your dial indicator) every degree to 15 after
then you will know if you can move the degreed centerline
for future reasons

What would be acceptable numbers in that range? Should I be able to read max lift or some thing less?
Is this BTDC on compression stroke ?
I appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Mark

With 0 lash, start at 15 before, 0 the indicator then
press the valve till it touches write down that number,
continue doing it till 15 after... the same way, zeroing
each time before you press it down, this will give
you your max at each degree... in case you want to
advance the cam in the future(or retard it) .100 is fine

Sorry to ask so many questions, I just wanted to be clear on this. I made a few checks starting at 10* before and was getting .250" minimum, but wasn't sure if that was OK. I will recheck starting at 15 BTDC.
Thank you again,
Mark

Sounds like you have a ton of room, I said 15 only
because about 10 degrees is usually the close spot
but not always. The reason I say to get a real number is
you dont know what you have if you put a .100 spacer
in it, thats one of the reasons I like to clay but
also get a number at each degree for advance or retard
purposes

Like P said 10 before will be closest on the ex and 10 after will be closest on the intake.

Nice looking mill too!

Great! I think I can wrap this up and have some notes for future reference!
BTW I used the adjuster for the preload and not a spacer, if that matters?
Thanks,
Mark

Nice motor.

Piston is always chasin the valve , critical points to check are 15* before & after TDC , @ full lift the piston is too far down the hole , unless the valve events are all messed up.

It would be good to carefully measure and record how much clearance you have, so when you think about another cam you'll know how big you can go later.

Thanks Darren ,
I will do that. I already have a file going on this engine build, I need to include these measurements as well. I can see a bigger cam in the future.
