I want to get a better tach and saw Autometer prices went up after January 1st. I found a used one for about a third less than a new one, and a leftover new one in a beat up looking box that is priced in between new and this used one. No warranty unless I pay the big bucks, so I don't know how much to be worried about either of the cheaper choices not working properly. Never had a tach that didn't work, but never spent this much money for one before either.

I've purchased multiple used tachs over the years without any problems. It wouldn't hurt to have some conversation with the seller to try and get a feel for their demeanor. Sometimes you can just get a bad feeling about a great deal just in a couple of chat messages. As much as it bothered me to do it, I had to walk away from a great deal on a set of B1 MC heads because I didn't like the way the guy was reacting to questions from me.

I don't think i've ever owned a new tach.

For me if its $200 new and $150 used, I'm just going to spend the $200.

Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat

I've seen $500.00 Autometer tachometers sell for under $100.00.
There were a few that sold recently that were well over $375.00-$400.00 new go for $75.00 shipped.

I ran Autogage tachs in my cars for years, but wanted to upgrade to a "better" tach that was easier for me to see at night (At the time we started doing a lot of night racing). So I found the tach I wanted on Jegs/Summit and than found it on ebay a lot cheaper and purchased. Tach worked okay, but when you rev'd the car in neutral, the tach seemed slow to respond. Turns out there ARE counter fit autometer tachs out there and the one I bought off ebay was counter fit. I ended up getting my money back and purchasing a legit one than. I did a little research about how to spot a counter fit tach (there are slight clues with the packaging, like the shift light would have the cover installed while in the box and a few other things to look for) that would tell you if it was a fake or not. So even if your buying "new" but from someone just do a little research to know what to look for to make sure you get a non counterfeit one.

Seems a little high to me, but that's a personal decision.

Used race parts (and cars for that matter) are being sold for a song right now. Especially stuff with a wire attached to it. New stuff on ebay is Russian roulette unless you know where it's coming from.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

There is a known issue with counterfeit Autometer gauges; I just Googled it and saw links to multiple articles.

I bought a used Autometer Prostcok tach for $100 in the race classifieds years ago. Never realized how expensive they are now.
