Pull the brown (solenoid) wire off of the starter relay & see if it straightens out. then yes pull the starter & see if the pinion gear is free then have your shop fire it up. I'm assuming the starter is not hung up/sets flat on the trans mounting surface. EDIT on second thought grab a helper to hold it & your jumper cables & jump it on the ground right next to the LF wheel/battery & see if the pinion retracts when you open the power to the small solenoid threaded stud

Yes that does sound more practical. Holler with what you find & we'll continue on. One thing you might do beforehand is unbolt the brown solenoid wire on the starter relay & touch it to the batt stud just long enough to fire up the starter/eng (key on) on the off chance that the relay is sticking.
