Hey guys, my nephew has a ’73 340 Duster with an open rear-end. A friend has a ’96 Dakota with a Sure-Grip differential, will that Suregrip unit go into a ’73 Duster 8 ¼” housing?

yes, but the '96 up carrier is 29 spline, the Duster would have 27 spline axles. Moser can make a set of 29 spline axles for the duster rear. I beleive they are $315 for a set of axles, and then you need the correct c-clips for the 29 spline. new ones are always a good idea.

for that kind of money, wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to install a sure grip in the existing axle?

Have you seen the price on sure-grips for an 8.25 lately?

I believe that was the point of the post taking the SG out of the Dakota and putting it into the Duster rear; also the spline count change was 97+, so you should be OK to use that SG. (though IDK if it was a "mid year" change, so that one would be too close to the cutoff to say for certain, w/o actually counting the splines)

Well, I'm the guy with the rear and I plan on removing the cover for a look to confirm gear ratio. No reason I can't pull an axle and count splines as I think I can still count that high.......

One more thing, the ring gear must have a tone ring for the ABS. If Jeff wants to run these gears will there be any problem?

You may have to slightly grind the old case for clearance. but you can remove the tone ring with no issues, too.

Yep:

Mopar Performance P4529273 $313.95

For the same price, I'd go with a new one and be done with it. It'll drop right in and you know it'll last a while. How long will a used SG last?

You can still count, and I can still grind.

Works for me. I'll let you know when I yank an axle, which is a whole lot better than yankin' yer chain..........

The tone ring is a seperate piece that sandwiches between the carrier and ring gear, easy enough to leave out if you are swapping the differential.
