I am buying a 1972 W200 crew cab tomorrow. Ex military truck. Had a 318 that is gone. NP 435 tranny. I found a 1999 truck with a 5.9 that had title issues. I want to take the engine and all of the wiring harness from the headlights to the taillights and install in the 72. Hopefully use the tank out of the 99. I would get the 99 factory wiring diagram and remove things like the a/c wiring, etc. I may need to get a manual computer as the 99 is an auto. Am I crazy? Has anyone went down this road before. I did some searching and didn't find anything so if someone knows of any articles that mimic this I would appreciate it.

I checked a 97 Wiring harness when my son was putting a 5.9 out of a 97 Ram into his 57 wagon, (same deal, fuel injection in a non injection vehicle) even with the factory service manual, that wiring harness is pretty complex. This was not my 1st go around with wiring, years ago I repaired a burned wiring harness from a late 80s 5th Ave at the Dealership I was working at, and I have rewired, or wired from scratch several vehicles. I looked at that 97 harness for a few weeks and determined that if I messed up 1 thing and it didn't run, I would have no recourse on what was wrong, short of starting over. My son dropped the grand and bought a Hot Wire Harness ( www.hotwireauto.com) and never looked back. The harness worked flawlessly and the tech support is great if you have a problem. The Hot Wire harness is a stand alone unit that connects to your computer, and plugs into the stuff on your motor & trans. 4 wire hook up to make it run, and extra wires are in the harness for things like gauges and stuff if you want or need them. That was a few years ago, there may be more info available now. The FSM was fairly confusing, nothing like the older wiring diagrams. Gene

...and dont worry about changing the computer.... If he wires in an MIL it will stay on as the PCM is looking for info from the auto trans that is no longer there. I'm fighting the same problem in my Durango and have decided to just bite the bullet and buy a manual trans PCM. Seems I recall reading that one of the codes causes it to go into limp mode? I know if I wind mine up it goes into fuel cut a little over 4k. Other than that and the MIL on, it runs fine. Tim

... IIRC if the OBD-2 ecu doesn't detect the transmission it will pull timing and cut fuel at high rpm. That seems to be my problem. Tim

Well I bought the truck. I’ll post pics tomorrow when I get it home. I have access to a 95 model truck wiring harness with a manual tranny. Any thought on how that harness would work with the 99 5.9?

Congrats on the truck. Couple of things but you may have already thought of them- You'll need to notch the bellhousing for the crank position sensor and you'll need a 5.9 flywheel to trigger the sensor. Tim

I knew about the bellhousing notch. Seems straightforward. I will need a 132 tooth flywheel for a Magnum engine. Summit has one but it doesn't mention the notch's so I have to do some research. Thanks.

Well that didn't work too well. Cab and doors are good. Hood is good. Floorpans need work but not too bad. Bed is rusted above both wheelwells so I am going to look for another. Need a grill and tailgate. Aftermarket fenders seem to be inexpensive but haven't read anything on quality. This thing has at least Dana 60's front and rear. I will id them tomorrow. It has a lean to one side so probably a spring but I am going to lift it so new spring are gonna happen.
That front bumper and winch and mirrors are coming off tomorrow. Lotta work ahead.

I believe the fuel tank from the 99 is going to be a problem as its taller where the module is. I'm going to use a 93 RC tank in mine along with all the wiring, dash and magnum engine in my 74. I also got a NV4500 5 speed from a 97 2500 2WD to use in it. I got my flywheel from Rock Auto.
My fenders are cracked in the exact spot as your left side fender is too. I figured that was from oversize tires before it was lifted.
Good luck finding a grill in decent condition.

Well I bought the truck. I’ll post pics tomorrow when I get it home. I have access to a 95 model truck wiring harness with a manual tranny. Any thought on how that harness would work with the 99 5.9? I used a 99 5.2 with a 95 harness. I had to swap over the throttle body sensors from the 95 as the connectors had changed by 99. Also had to drill and tap a hole in the intake manifold for the coolant temp sensor that the 99's don't have. I also changed the speed sensor connector to match the one that fit my conversion. Without the speed sensor hooked up it wants to stall on decel when coming down to an idle, even with the clutch pushed in. Also the 95 computer is calibrated expecting 40 psi where the 99 is 50psi. I'm running a GM LS1 58 psi filter/regulator so I swapped to smaller injectors to make back the difference in fuel flow. It ran with the stock injectors, but too rich.

I am pulling the harness from a 95/manual tranny/318 truck tomorrow morning. I will pull every sensor I can, label like crazy and take a bunch of pictures. Gonna get the tank to if I can get it out.

A little update.
I pulled everything under the hood of the 95/manual truck that I could. Nothing was hacked except the wires going to the AC clutch. The rest goes into the dash area so that's next. It's been raining a bunch so that slowed me down on that piece. My plan is to remove every factory wire form the 72. Once I get the new Magnum I am going to connect everything to see if it will run the Magnum before it gets installed for good. I want to use the 95 column and gauges. Not sure about the speedo.
The 99 got crushed but my buddy at the salvage yard has a very clean looking 2002 with 5.9 that he want me to use. It was hit bad in the front but the engine and whole truck look clean. I may even try to use the interior seats as I have none at the moment
The entire front clip and bed is off of the 72. A 4 inch lift kit is ordered. This thing has a Dana 70 front and Dana 60 rear. I read that the PTO winch MAY have been the reason for the 70 front axle. Anybody need a winch cheap.
It has 47,000 original miles on it.
I think I was wrong about the flywheel. It seems I need a 143 tooth Magnum flywheel which Rock Auto has listed for a 2002 Magnum 5.9.
I think I will use the 72 W200 23 spline clutch setup and get a Magnum pilot roller bearing and test fit everything on my shop floor.

Sounds like a fun project! The manual trans trucks used a different crankshaft position sensor than the autos so I hope you snagged that. I used a 143 tooth flywheel, however I used an ax-15 transmission. See I learned something today. I guess I'm glad I got out of bed after all.
