Well let me start with it's been a while since I did body work and primer 20+ years since. So I go to the local auto paint supply house to get some primer I told him what I was doing and he sold me some limco 800 2k primer with hardner I was like ok but forgot to get reducer so probly going to get a mid dring reducer in a few days but Did buy some multi use to clean the gun. My question is can this product be use on bare metal or do I need to put a sealer on first? the car is going to be stripped to bare metal due to the many coats of paint on it and a crappy quater panel someone put on it that needs to be fixed. Thanks in advance for the replys. to the great guys hear on moparts.

Mark

I always use an etch or epoxy primer on bare metal first

It also depends on how the car is stripped to bare metal. If it is sandblasted or soda blasted, Metal prep should be used before epoxy or self etching primer is applied.

you really need to get some epoxy primer on bare metal before the 2k primer

Better to aply a light coat of etching primer first ( repeat:light!) but sounds like you bought a urethane primer......wich would be ok too...

Best is Plasti-kote zinchromate primer, really tough ! have had fenders in the snow for years and Zinc held tough !!! if done patch by patch a couple of spray can will do the job with you urethane primer after.....just remember: there is a 3 hours window of application after to spray the primer....after it won't hols as long....

Dont use anything from a spray can.

Read the tech sheets for what you bought. Some 2ks are DTM (direct to metal)

If your concerned with adhesion of the 2K to bare metal spray some epoxy, No need to an etch primer no a days.

epoxy primer on bare metal. etch is a thing of the past and a waste of money.
