There was a recent post on Herb McCandless where a number of people piped in with their appreciation for his knowledge & assistance over the years. And then I posted a relatively minor, but not positive, experience with Herb from 20+ years ago that cost me a few dollars.

Mike McCandless, Herb's son, posts on here and happened to see my comment. In response to what I said, he posted that he'd pay me for what I believed I should have been reimbursed from that transaction many years ago. I gave him my address and the background on the deal, and that was basically the extent of the conversation.

Today his check arrived in the mail.

This is an "interesting" situation, if only because:
- I certainly didn't post my comment with the intent of getting repaid
- It wasn't intended to badmouth Herb, only to point out that nobody's perfect among all the other accolades >> I even called The Admiral an a$$hole to his face as the result of a particular situation, so my family is far from immune to this <<
- Mike could have said nothing, or simply responded like: "That's life; Dad was really busy back then and occasionally things fell between the cracks."
- The check didn't even come with an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) >> OK, that's supposed to be a joke given the current political environment <<

And now I have this check...

I'm pragmatic, so I will be depositing it. Hey, my Challenger ain't going to pay for itself to go back together. But it feels kind of... weird.

So I suppose the only thing I have left to say is...
Mike - Thanks, and I hope your father's doing well. My father passed away about 7 years ago, so take advantage of the time you still have with him.

I would donate it to DRAW, but that's me. Herb has given me plenty of good, free advice that still serves me well.

Brad you are a stand up guy, the world needs more like you. & same for herb JR. I spoke with herb Sr years ago & he tried to help me with a bobweight dilemma & the conversation went well.

No worries. Not sure why it happened, but always believe in making things right. Glad it all worked out.

We all make mistakes and forget.
Very weird IMO. Proves what kind of guy MR McCandless is.

Nope.

Mike said he'd send me $100 without my having mentioned what the original expense was. I did a quick calc out of curiosity and it happened to work out about the same as if the original expense had been earning a reasonable interest rate over the years. Completely coincidental...

The rest of the crap being posted in response to this -- whether intended as humor or not -- isn't worthy of comment.

The moderator on duty can lock or delete this thread as they wish. shruggy

Wow: Im the new guy here but- wow.
I really love this community of people i have met here so far and thus the direction thus has taken is rather disturbing.
1. it doesn't sound like Brad was trying to shame Herb/his family or collect on an old mistake in the first place.
2. Mike- wow. Stand up guy, welcome at my table and my shop any day.
As a Dad,a Father-man, I hope my children treat people/life as you do.
Ethics aren't statements, they are deeds- yours are well shown.
Thank you, inspiring.
3.I think the thing to take from this is what i indicated above and that as something far greater than all our parts/tunings etc.
This family was made aware of something that fell through the cracks in times past, they corrected it . Apparently they believe pretty strongly in doing the "next right thing" - I hope i do so well always.
4. What Brad does with it is technically his business, I thought it pretty open and honest that he shared it- thus sharing the integrity of the McCandless family- thanks for that Brad.
opinion: If it "feels,,,weird" one might want to explore that- end of unasked opinion.

Lastly- man i love this community, i really hate to see the wonderful efforts of Mike McCandless drowned in negatives.

Just my opinion.
I pray my sons are just like Mike if they find i mistreated someone.

This just ultimately shows that Herb Sr. did a great job in raising a Son to be a man of integrity.
Glad it all got settled.

I agree with FMJ.

You can judge McCandless Sr by his son.

Senior did a damn good job and raised an honest son. That says more than anything about Sr than anything else. And it's a damn sight more important.

I cant lie, I thought it was a bit odd, and actually distasteful to go on that particular thread and make that comment.I mean holy crap Brad, 20 years ago, but, if you feel better for it, and the Challenger gets done right?....stand up ovation for the way Mr McCandless handled it.
