I am trying to install a water temp gauge but cannot budge the 38 square plug that has been in there for 50 years it is a 1967 440 housing any advice thanks mark

I find heat works wonders on such things.
Propane is usually not enough.
If you don't nave an oxy/acetylene set up, take the housing to a friend that does, or a local shop. They should be able to remove that plug in minutes.

Those plugs can be a bear.

I agree with heat, wax, AND the biggest impact wrench you can get your hands on.

Another vote for heat and wax.Also Ive had them where I can heat them and cold water while its hot.Seems the water can make steam and wick into the threads.Rocky

If those aren't practical for you,
Center punch and drill the plug as big as you dare.
Then try to collapse it into the hole with a punch and hammer.
At some point it'll loosen its grip on the threads.
