what mean's do you guys that run a vac pump use to check for leaks, also what oil breather are you using, I have a small moroso that has a breather on top and a petcock on bottom to drain but has some sort of coarse steel wool/scratchy pad like baffeling and is doing a poor job of containing the oil, I have to keep a couple of shop towel's wrapped and zip tied around the breather cap.

The shop towel, zip tie is a typical deal. Same on mine. I think that the volume of the tank is so much smaller than the volume of the engine that it moves a lot of air through it. You could try smoke at or around 3,000 rpm. Maybe bench test the smoke at the largest vacuum the engine makes so you can get a feel for what it trails like. It will be hard to detect. The valley pan and valve cover area are the most likely culprits. Running a gear or belt drive will help that area. The oil pan is the largest gasket area but gets some help from the oil itself.

I know that pulling the dip stick and capping the tube made an inprovement and cut back the amount of oil in the tank but this is with little to no vac showing on the gage and the regulator wide open to the point the check ball isn't even seated, so I know it's sucking air somewhere, just got to find it.

I like to pressurize the engine with a constant 12 to 15 psi. You might have to get creative to install a fitting.. then I spray around with a spray bottle with water and 10% dish soap. You will be surprised at what leeks you will find

rails on the vc's are machined and so are the rails on the trick flow head's, using the Superformance CarbonX gaskets.

Before buying a big electric vacuum pump, I had a 1hp electric motor and a long v-belt. I would jack up the car and set the pump below it with the long v belt and run the pump then light up a cigar and watch the smoke disappear into the engine.

I use either Shilo method at the track or a smoke making at the shop. Been using smoke machines for years on new car repairs of EVAP system. An invaluable tool for sure.

this fitting works good for pressurizing a system with shop air & it is less than $3 at O'reillys. Be carefull, if there ain't much air (full of coolant) it will pump up FAST & 5 psi is plenty. I used it in the cooling temp sender 1/8 NPT port & on a seperate issue I made a smoke pump from a burning rag with baby oil in a paint can on a utube vid! (I found the leak).
