I normally mark bare aluminum intakes, heads. So they are easy as silver and whatever shows up easily.
With the Cast iron exhaust manifolds, they are blasted and painted black.
Thoughts? Also, everything read say to use 80 grit rolls Verses carbide. I have many boxes of them. As well as finner.

Is there a question there?

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Put a little rubber cement on the part you want to mark, install gasket, tighten bolts, let dry, remove, mark it.

I make a horizontle swath of Dyken across the top & bottom of the intake & head ports then scribe a horizontle line across the top & bottom of the ports in the dye (+slight porting ahead of time to get the top/bottoms of the ports even, as needed) then at each "end" of the scribed lines a 90 deg turndown in a bit more dykem. so you have an "L" at the end of each horizontle scribed line (I hope that descrip makes sense). Do the same on the intake then I set the intake down on the side gaskets (SB) & at each end of the eng tilt the manifold a bit up/down (side to side) till the lines between the heads & the intake have the same gap on each of the 4 corners. EDIT (SB) May need thicker/thinner side gaskets or even 2 pairs and or elongating the intake mounting holes or intake milling. Mockup dry & go from there.

Thanks
The intake was pro done as well as the heads. But thinking of doing stock 340 exhaust manifolds.
When I have done stuff it was silver and easy to mark.
I just want to gasket match and clean up the ports best I can.
Never done anything other than soft stuff. So this should be an adventure. Here is a shot of the polish work on the heads. And the port work that was done on the intake. I only have 1/3rd the intake outside polished.

Sorry, that was the wrong picture. I just have 1/3rd the outside of the intake done {to look good} when I am done with it I was going to try my hand at gasket match and blend the port on the exhaust. I have never marked anything it is just done freehand when doing what I do.
Here is a shot of the outside of the head.

Not sure what your looking to do. Is that last pic Ozzie? A wide tip sharpie works well if your looking to do some porting to a scribed line. Not sure if I'm close to your question, but wish you good luck.

With the engine assembled I use gaskacinch or contact cement to stick the gaskets to the head, just three small dabe about the size of a dime. Make sure the gasket and ports are lined up. Once it's set up I bolt the intake on and scribe a line on the gasket along the top of the intake, also mark each gasket for drivers and passengers side. Then unbolt the intake and remove the gasket, some contact cements may require a razor blade scraper to aid in removal. Then bolt the gasket to their respective sides of the intake making sure the scribe line matches the intake, then scribe the ports. I just use a black permanent marker around the ports before I scribe around the gasket.

Lookup acid porting exhaust manifolds on utube. good gains to be had.

Before you do anything make sure the drivers side 340 manifold doesn’t hit the head where it turns back towards the block to clear the steering shaft. It is a hit or miss thing (pun intended)mine did and the way I solved it was bought a header flange and some longer studs and manifold bolts. Sandwich the header flange in between to space the manifold out to clear the head. Then port match all three. Also alternator fitment can be a pain. The alternator hits the head sometimes. I would hate for you to gouge the head after all that work.

It’s been a long time, but IIRC isn’t this a street car? What are your performance goals. I did notice a performance gain port matching and cleaning up the exhaust manifold entries a touch, but nothing big. I know of cars running 11.7 with just being port matched. With a free flowing intake side you could be low 11’s. Acid or extrude hone not really worth it unless you are shooting for that last couple of hp.
