Howdy!

I just brought home a 9.25 axle for my big block 50s truck project. I was told it is from a 77 truck. It’s 5 on 4.5 already and 3.55 sure grip so it’ll be a nice upgrade for my 8.25/ 3.21 open gears currently under my chassis. It is a little wet around the pinion so I’m thinking it will need new seals.

Setting the pinion angle, welding perches, that’s stuff I’ve done a bunch, but I want to give this axle a good seal-up and maybe freshen it a little as needed which is new stuff to me.

I’ve never worked on one of these before- I understand how to pull the c clips but I’m nervous about messing up the crush sleeve if I pull the yoke to do a new seal. I guess I can scribe/punch the nut and housing and return it to identical clocking/tightness?

I read an article that said a clutch refresh for the sure grip is sub $100. Any good sources for parts for these if the clutches are beat?

I have read in searches around here that the discs from my 8.25 will swap right over which would be nice. I have an almost brand new disc setup from a 90s jeep grand cherokee with the little e brake drum hat and new calipers rotors cables & hard lines. Any advice about the brake swap would also be appreciated!

Thanks Moparts!

I am rebuilding a 9 1/4 as well. I bought the crush sleeve eliminator spacer.

Others may have different experiences, but I will only use Timken bearings in my stuff.

Check Rockauto, Randy's Ring and Pinion, or Doc Diff for parts.

There is an article in Mopar Action this month about a rear disc brake upgrade using Jeep Liberty rear rotors and parts. Not sure if it would apply to your application or not.

I got some more time in on the 9.25 the past couple days.

I opened it up last night and was pleasantly surprised that the only slop is in the axles- a tiny bit side to side and a little bit of axle play in the splines. Seems normal- I’ll look at the wear on the axles when they come out. I still have to measure endplay and inch pounds on the rotation but it feels tight, smooth, and the wear looks ok. I scraped, brushed, degreased, power washed, re-scraped, power wire brushed, brakleened, and POR15’d the housing so it’ll be clean and easy to work on. Jeez it’s hot today!

I got axle and pinion seals coming from rockauto and a yukon crush sleeve eliminator kit coming from amazon. I guess I’ll start with the same size as the crushed oem sleeve and measure from there. I was entertaining the idea of trying to replicate the pinion nut position and inch pounds needed to turn it and leaving the existing sleeve but that might not be the best idea behind 600 ft/lbs.

With 600 ft/lbs odds are, even if you put the crush sleeve in perfectly, it would further crush the sleeve and destroy the rear axle. That is exactly why crush sleeve eliminators were thought up.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.
