First and foremost, are rebuilt alternators that have sat on a shelf noisy when first fired up?
In other words, are they supposed to sound intimately ratty like something is slightly rubbing? Would it/could it be the brushes and stator breaking in or is it something to worry about?

Second: Are civilian cars with options such as AC, light group, radio, heater, rear window defogger, 3 speed wipers, Windshield washer pump, cigarette lighter, ignition key reminder come from the factory with a 60 amp alternator or is it a 35 amp unit?

Thank you in advance.

First question answer is no,I never had a rebuilt alternator make noise twocents I've rebuilt some of my own with new brushes, bearings and diode and never heard any noises any OEM Mopar alternator other than from a worn out one with a bad rear bushing shruggy
On the second question what year and brand car?

I think that year car should have had a 65 amp alternator with all the accessories shruggy
Try looking it up on NAPA web site to see if they list that amp alternator for that year car with air conditioning scope luck

Lee,
Once again, if you dig out the build sheet, it will answer your questions!

I would ASSuME that it'd be the highest amper available for that year/app tho if you have to get another one (& it sounds like you will) I would get the highest amper unit available that is just below the 78 amper available for an 85 M body (that one has a thin stator & needs slight fore/aft adjustments, no big deal just sayin & MAY need a swing arm change, the chebby $10 chrome one iirc) & the 70's ones have (2) field terminals & you can easily just ground one of em to the nearby alt case if needed for your app. There was something (iirc) about higher amp alts not charging as well at lower RPM's (no info on that, if true or false, just sayin). Even more important I would clean ALL terminals/connections including ground paths & a braided strap from eng to firewall is a good addition. there are 2 different alt pulley dia's & I'd use the smaller one (I forget the dimentions). 2&3/4" on the smallest iirc.

I know, I know, I'll get back to the back seat later this afternoon and dig around.
This alternator was given to me by a gent on my block who had many Mopes back in the day and had this one in the box on his shelf.

Okay, had a local alternator guy look at it and it was indeed rubbing on the rear cover somehow. He fixed it in half an hour. Running smooth and quiet now.
Thanks guys.

Here is the spec page from the 1973 Dodge FSM. Shows a 50 and a 60 amp with HD or A/C. Don’t ask me what the car line letter designates. I found it in this manual once when I was working on my Dart (but have forgotten) but I looked through both volumes and a supplement tonight and couldn’t find anything but the VIN designation. shruggy Can anyone elaborate on why Dodge had service manual letter designations different from the VIN letter? The damn manual has instructions on how to bend it to line up the black tabs! Why wouldn’t the different car line letters be spelled out big and bold on the first freaking page???

The letters do match the VIN, if you understand where they came from.

V=Valiant, the first Plymouth A body. My 65 Cuda starts out with a V.
L=Lancer, the first Dodge A body.

They follow on from there

This is a 1973 Dodge FSM. It covers all A, B and C body cars made by Dodge that year. I still don't understand it and can't find where it says this car is = to this letter... I found it once because I figured out what my Dart was. Can't remember if Dart is a V but I'm pretty sure it's not an L like on the VIN tag. It would be pretty simple to have it on the introduction page. It has the explanation of the VIN designation in all three books. Some chapters don't use the letter designation they just say "Challenger" or "Polara/Monaco". I also found it interesting that some electric components like starters were Chrysler built. The alternators were not.

blush Sorry for the rant. It was in half jest anyway but you clarified why my Dart is a V. Hint... My VIN starts with LL. penguin

Your Dart is an L not a V, it's listed in the parts books, image from the 74 parts book, don't have a 73

It's a Dart Sport and it is a V in the service manual. Must have to do with the Duster like body???

You said your VIN started with LL? Where is this V coming from?

Below chart is right out of the 73 Dodge FSM

Evidently from the Plymouth VIN designation. All I was trying to say is that the DODGE service manual is full of letters that don't relate to DODGE.
