Ok so I have hauled many cars in this trailer for 19 years. Today I went to load a car and when loading the car the tongue is lifting up, disengaging from the ball!😳

I keep messing with it and making sure the mechanism is under the ball and cradelungvut but it keep popping off.

So apparently something is broken or bent?

So I’m on line trying to figure out what mechanism or parts I can order for it. I can’t find what I need . Is there a specific name for this type of mechanism or keyword to locate parts ?

Thanks for any assistance

Sounds like wear on the coupler part that locks onto the ball.
The North40 store near me (kinda like Tractor Supply) has replacement tongue assemblies, you'll need to weld.

So I have to weld on an entirely new tongue ? The inside assembly can’t be replaced?

I guess if they don`t sell kits for them you could buy the complete coupler and exchange parts if you don`t want to weld a new one on. I would make sure it is the exact same brand. There has to be some markings on there somewhere I would think. Does the title have a name of the trailer on it. Maybe you can search that way.

That does look similar but I’m guessing it has to be rated higher than 5000? In any case I guess I need to get a pro to check it out. Take no chances when hauling . And I have two trucks to go pick up too😖

On a side note it’s an 18 ft all metal top trailer.

So I did some more work remembering I repainted this years ago. I went out and sanded down the paint

It’s an 8500 lb coupler. I guess I need to go find one that rating it higher, gets my gas refilled and just remove and weld in a new one 🤔. I just never saw this thing ever failing like this .

Yea, The link was just a example not knowing what exactly what you needed. I was searching one site and they made mention of a China made coupler. Hmmm, maybe that is a reason for the failure. Who knows? Your right better be safe then sorry.

I'm wondering where the failure is: in the jaw/tongue area or the hardware that the coupler lock uses?
I'm thinking that if the trailer was rocking back & forth on the ball long enough, either the jaw or the hardware's been taking a beating. Could even be that someone using the couple on a smaller ball helped beat it up.
Stumpy might be on to something: measure the ball & see if that's a contributing factor.
I'm guessing the trailer has a lot of miles on it, if it wasn't abused by a previous owner/borrower. My 35-year-old open trailer with a 2" coupler is still fine, but it's lived a pretty soft life: always lubed ball/coupler, has only seen pavement & some gravel road, probably never loaded more than 4400 lbs on it, lives indoors when not being used.

I don’t own any 2 inch balls and my 2 5/16 is fine

I bought a different style couple and welded it in today and picked up a truck. All is well. Thanks for the help.
