what's the correct bolt size to join exhaust manifold to pipes ?

head, bolt lenght and diameter, and thread.

wow!!! 3/8 diameter 9/16 head ? I have actually 11/16 bolt head mounted on ? dunno the diameter, I'm not good on that, but bolt allmost fill completelly the exhaust hole.

that would left LOT OF ROOM between hole and bolt!!!

I guess grade 8 ?

Yes that's what you want a large a diameter as will fit in there. I was thinking that the last one I was on was a 3/8" shank with a 9/16" head. If you're buying new bolts I think grade 5 would be adequate(cheaper) if you didn't have some grade 8 ones in your parts stash.

Also go with grade 8's and use some anti-seize on the threads as I think the torque on those is around 50 ftlbs.

the problem is 11/16 bolt heads dosn't allow to fit the wrench ( with closed side of wrench ) on top to hold the screw for a while you are tighten the nut.

maybe if I get 5/8" head bolt will be in the middle of the line ?

I wanted to get filled the hole to a propper aligment of pieces, but!!!

Or maybe grade 8 fine thread ( I think mines are larger thread ) will get less damage on head with holding with open side of wrench with 11/16 head ?

The advantage on use the closed side of wrench, is they hold by themself on place for a while I tight the nut.

On my manifolds on the drivers side I had to grind down about 90' worth of bolt head so they could be put into the manifold flange due to the tight clearance. They tighten just fine however.

I just did this fight last summer, I had 3/8 dia bolts in it and it leaked..so,
I replaced them with 7/16th bolts..
But in reality the true problem was one of the pipes was not bent correctly and was hitting the torsion bar or bellhousing causing the misalignment.
I had to have new pipes made to correct the problem.
I used gr 8 bolts and nuts..

Incorrect, the CORRECT size for BIG BLOCK exh manifold to fipe is a 7/16-14 bolt . as far as asking the bolt head size ??? The only come one way , the nuts though can be either 5/8 or 11/16"
