OK more than just wondering...there's currently a discussion on FB in the Mopar Collectors Guide closed group about b bodies from Lynch rd and St louis getting dented on the right side of the cowl w a ball peen hammer 1 or 2 times to indicate the shift they were built. Anyone heard this or seen unexplained dents on top of right side of the cowl? there are numerous pics of cars w these dents....

I've heard of cigarette butts being commonly found in original engine oil pickups....smoking was not permitted in the engine building plant.

I thought you could tell by the random clumps of seam sealer all over the engine compartment. The more clumps, the later the shift! laugh

AFAIK there were no cars being built on a third shift (MOPAR musclecar era)

I've been working on a number of "ACTUAL Production Date" VS. "SCHEDULED Production Date" calendars from certain years & plants: '69 Lynch Rd. & '70 St. Louis are among them

adding the "rumored" shift dent info in the cowl to the mix would help to verify both or either trains of thought

how many shifts does it take to assemble a "typical" car?

I'll have to get to '70 Lynch Rd. soon - just put an engine in a Superbird - two-dents (need to get a better pic) scope

We have had significant discussion on this topic over at the A12 forum. The shift theory began many years ago starting from GG. While I used to believe the shift theory was correct, I now respectfully disagree.

To summarize the A12 discussion. These are not shift indicators. They are from a welder. There are two different jaws that were used. A flat type and a round type. I have seen as many as 3 markings on LR cars which quickly debunks the shift theory.

They are visible on vintage LR body in white pictures. The dents are found on both sides at LR and occasionally on the right side at SL. And, SL is mostly just 1 dent on the right side.

As Dan asks above, was a car built in one shift? No, that does not even happen today.

So, to summarize, these are not shift marks. The are from a welder and are part of the manufacturing process, nothing else.

Quite a few years ago I got a nickle tour of the Ford van assembly plant in Ohio. I think the engineer I was with said it took about 2 days from when the sheet metal was stamped (they stamped the panels at this assembly shop) to when a truck rolled off the line. Once the line starts though, it kept banging them out. I don't recall if this plant only had one shift or two shifts running though.

It will take two day's construction from Metal Shop to loading a running car on a transport truck! The very long assembly lines move slowly and steadily.

Some great info, this is my fav. http://www.wwnboa.org/slaprer.htm
