I have a 68 R/T charger . Factory A/C car. The thought of trying to make all these old a/c parts work is a bit overwhelming even with my skill set. All my pieces are unknown, meaning Ive never felt them blowing cold so who knows if any of it work. Im wondering what is the best set up to run? I see vintage air and classic air set ups. Does anyone sell the complete stock set up with everything type package? I dont want to piece it together either. Be pretty awesome if I can get a/c working in my charger here in california. Also, I want to run the 134 stuff since its much cheaper than the r12. Thanks for help and suggestions. My decision would be a lot easier if you guys knew the best set up to run with ease of installation being priority, fitting in stock locations and then price.

I just had my original AC parts restored by Classic Auto air for my '70 Challenger. I have friends who have put aftermarket AC kits on their vintage rides and they are happy. But these are on resto mod type cars, as they don't look at all like an OE setup. If you want an OE look, I don't think you have much choice but to use restored original parts. They converted mine to R134, other than a fitting on the compressor, I don't think anything looks a bit different than stock after converting to 134. My project got installed in fall, and the guy working on it said you can't charge AC when it's cool or cold, so that isn't going to be done until later, spring is coming late here so I don't know how much later! So I don't know the cooling performance yet, however I was talking to a local with a '71 GTX last summer with restored AC converted to R134, and he told me it gets so cold his wife will sometimes make him turn off the AC when they are driving in the car!

If you aren't hung up on all original appearance, I'd get a Bouchillion bracket kit to mount a Sanden compressor because they are supposed to take less power to run and they are designed for 134a.
Change/adapt the hoses to 134 friendly type, add a new receiver dryer and use the factory evaporator and condenser after a flush and pressure test.
Should be good to go for a reasonable cost.
Kevin This is what I did on my 68 Charger, works great, when I had the ac box out to rebuild it I replaced the heater core, This set up will FREEZE you out.

My 70 Sport Satellite . . . I got all the lines redone by Classic Auto Air, along with new evaporator, got NOS condenser, rebuilt compressor . . . rebuilt the heater/a/c unit under the dash myself, made sure all parts were R134 compatible, and took into AC shop to get charged . . . 5 years later, still blows ice cold !! . . . sure the RV2 compressor takes some HP, but it is factory correct . . . . you can get it done. I figure all the Classic Auto Air restoration and parts came to $2,200.00. . . and probably another $1000 for rest of items . . . .

Kevin Used the Bouchillon bracket and a Mustang Sanden style pump with R12. Very cold. Craig

I bought the whole kit from CAA and converted my ‘72 Charger to the short Sanden pump. That was five years ago and no problems. This is after I ran one year with the original system that I had converted to 134. I had replaced the dryer and had the system purged, oil changed out and charged. It ran great for a year until the compressor locked up tight. No way would I use and original compressor unless every piece, including the compressor, was either swapped or completely restored. My understanding that due to higher pressures in the 134 system and the oils not being compatible it is very risky to mix and match and try to make old and new pieces work together.

Back in the day I bought 2 30lbs cannisters of R12 for my 70RR. Sold the RR, but used one to recharge stock system on my daughters 69 Charger RT. We rebuilt the heater box, pressure checked the evaporator while it was out, had the firewall heater valve rebuilt by Jim @ heatercontrolvalve.com, new dryer, NOS compressor clutch, and new expansion valve. Cools as good as my Tundra.
