At least that is what they were called when they were on the 2.2 engines Exactly correct. Does the plumbing go to the air cleaner? What it does is use the negative pressure impulses to draw fresh air from the air cleaner into the exhaust stream. A "budget" smog pump system. Were it mine, I'd plug the manifolds and air cleaner and forget about it. There were factory block off plugs for the manifolds or you can fabricate something as you'll have to do for the air cleaner if you choose this route. Robert

My '77 318 Volare` had the same arrangement. I removed the entire assembly, cut the flange off the exhaust manifold side of the assembly, welded a disc in the flange tubing hole to make a plug, and reinstalled it on the exhaust manifold. Drove it that way for nearly 100,000 miles before I sold the car. I did something with the air cleaner end too but I can't remember what.
