Ok, so I picked up an early set of W2-econo heads top end package.

Looking them over before purchasing, I noticed they had oversized springs on them and the stock iron rocker arms have been relieved for clearance to the springs.

I'm trying to figure out the what springs these are, and if they are OK on a mild, less than .500 lift cammed 340...mainly stock type setup, with a Hemi grind style cam.

Spring size: OD, 1.550, ID-1.125, .208 wire size, and 2.135" tall, uninstalled height. Single spring only, with 10 degree locks, retainers, etc. Wanting to know what kind of pressure these were designed for.

And, what to change to for mild cam application. Or, if I can stick with these.

Thanks

I think you would need to measure the psi at the open and closed heights you have when you mockup. I'm in the same boat with my stuff. I sure wish Santa would give me a Rimac but likely I'll get one of those ones you compress in a vise (just need to be told which is a good one to get). Anyone?

Thanks. Looks like I'll take them to work and check them on a load cell.

Not an expert here, but I have one motor with beehive springs on a small block stroker. The dyno sheets show very nice curves, controlling a .560 lift hydraulic roller very well to 6000 + rpm. Springs are a cheap investment , I would get the perfect spring for the cam you intend to run. It will guarantee the best power output and will be easier on the valve train.

To use the vise one,you need to have something to stop the vise at open height and installed height.I prefer the benchtop.Yes,it cost more but the results are worth every penny!

HEMI-ITIS has no cure.
My condition is fully BLOWN!!

Have a local engine shop test those springs... not sure what "a Hemi grind style cam is".... but you'll get a spring recommendation from the cam grinder... best to stick with something close to that.

Guys, guys, guys........
Pressure is force divided by area.
What a spring exerts on a valve is a FORCE.

Read AndyF's discussion of rocker arms and see how neatly he talks about spring force.

The 0.208" wire diameter is but one factor in the spring rate.
To start guessing I'd measure the spring's free height and compressed height.
Then I'd count the number of turns.More turns indicate a smaller spring rate.

Then I'd start looking at spring catalogs and find a match.
If you know the free height and the installed height and the seat load you can calculate the spring rate.
When you know the installed height and the spring rate you can calculate everything else. F=KX Where F is force, K is spring rate and X is spring deflection.

The old rule of thumb is maximum spring deflection has to be no less than 0.060" plus the compressed height.

The real answer is to buy the springs that your camshaft requires and ebay the existing ones.
