I just use a regular bench mule if it still has the ears. One short and one long bolt with a spacer to hold it square. Bellhousing bolts if the ears are gone. I'll use two pan bolt holes if it's a lightweight 904.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Over the years most of those front ears were cut off both my mopar and powerglide transmissions. I started mounting mine from the tailshaft bolts (tailshaft either on or off) and it works great. Untitled by John Cadamore, on Flickr Untitled by John Cadamore, on Flickr

It needs an eye on the pipe to pick it up with. I have the eyes for the top rail but I haven't welded them on yet. I also designed a lift fixture for the transmission This makes it easy to pick up and drop into a pickup truck or to lift up on the engine stand. Could also work for a couple of guys to carry a transmission in the pits.
